Excellent pizza, probably the best (in my opinion) for all of greater Grand Rapids. You can order ahead of time to come pick it up or just pop in for a slice. If there’s any reason to knock this place it is nothing to do with their exquisite service and friendly staff or they’re absolute amazing pies, it’s just the geography of the place and the pinch point of having the one-way street and horrible parking selections. I try not to get to flustered by this and try to plan each visit to also include some shopping at the attached party store for some rare items and snacks or perhaps a couple crafties and even shoot down the block too the butcher or the bakery for some other goods as well. The pizzas here are outstanding. On par with such well-known national pizza places as Forno Rosso or Zarella in Chicago, the Blind Lady in San Diego, Prometheus in Fredericksburg, Texas and Farina In Grani.
Top tier.
I’m almost in disbelief we get to have this here in Michigan. Especially Western Michigan where there was never a well-known Italian American diaspora like they have over in Detroit.
You can never go wrong ordering the original. For me, It’s a must to try the basic margarita pizza, the one that started it all back in 1880’s Naples, Italy.
Basic, but full of flavor with an incredible sauce that isn’t runny. Delicious with the perfect crispy (not hard) crust. There are whole sprigs of basil and whole basil leaves on this bad boy which I know does turn a lot of people off. For me it’s how it’s always been done and why mess with it?
I always tell people when they go to a place to sample the most basic thing first like getting just vanilla from a place that makes its own ice cream or a simple three ingredient hefeweizen from a brewery before sampling something more complicated. This shows the craftsmanship and care placed into the simplest of recipes and is a pretty decent yard stick as to how much of that same care they will put into more complex items.
So, on to the more complex items.
The Webster does not use a traditional red sauce. It’s a garlic oil base which can be a little runny or messy but the flavor that impacts the entire slice with all the roasted garlic and pine nuts is such a delight.
Another non red sauce that I would highly recommend is the pesto chicken.
You have to remember that tomatoes didn’t exist in that part of the world until Columbus stole people and products from the Americas and took them back to Europe. Prior to that a lot of things were more similar to a Roman focaccia that they would just throw an occasional odd topping here and there to bake over an olive oil or what we would refer to as pesto style sauce. This has a great flavor and it’s almost like having a comfort food mixed with pizza but it’s so light and airy on this style of pie. You never feel weighed down by it.
Plan ahead, don’t ever bother on a weekday from 16:00 to 20:00 unless you’ve called ahead and are just picking up. It can be a real mess especially if it’s snow season.
I will be back again when searching for this flavor.
Staff was amazingly delightful.
Great Job!!
And thank you
(Takeout)
I did one of the original and one of the full meat pizzas. The original pizza was alright. I felt like it lacked sauce a little bit… the all meat pizza was actually pretty amazing. I really did enjoy alot. I unfortunately didn’t get a picture of that pizza. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a good pizza!
Writing and leaving a review today as I saw an older couple in there today complaining to the employee and felt that it was just wrong the way these two were acting. They were asking why it was taking longer than 15 minutes to get their pizzas that they ordered, saying that they had placed the order 20 minutes ago and now that it is past the 15 minutes they were told, they were complaining that they were going to be late to an appointment and needed their pizzas now. As well as framing the whole thing as if it were the poor employee’s fault that they were now without their pizzas and late to their function.
I have to say, the employee did a great job of attempting to defuse the RIDICULOUS situation and try to appease the couple. However, none of their problems have anything to do with Martha’s Pizza! Just two people who are clearly terrible with planning and time management, taking it out on a poor Martha’s Pizza worker.
Thanks Martha’s! Hopefully those two don’t come back.
