I work in Decatur somewhat seasonally and so whenever I’m up here I enjoy opportunities to try their local restaurants. On my most recent visit about three weeks ago, Marlin’s wound up being my choice for a quick lunch.
This is a rather oddball restaurant. Located in a standalone building on the edge of a large parking lot, the vibe inside I’d say is closest to an American-Mexican restaurant (a la Rosie’s, Buena Vista, etc – think vibrant murals, comfy booth seating, large, open spaces). It was a little dimly lit but clean. A friendly hostess got me a seat quickly.
The menu continues the oddball vibe. There’s literally something for everyone here, with American-Mexican favorites like fajitas and arroz con pollo, along with standard American fare like chicken tenders and pasta dishes, as well as slightly more upscale items like fish and steak. I saw on their website they claim, “We’re not just one thing – and that’s the point.” Well, they’ve certainly nailed that mantra.
My waiter was a pleasant fellow who worked diligently to ensure my meal and check arrived in a timely way. He got me a refill without me having to ask but didn’t hover or make me feel like I was unwelcome or a chore. My meal came out quickly and I was in and out in ~30 minutes, which is a pretty good turn-around for a sitdown restaurant.
Every table seems to get a complimentary basket of hush puppies as a welcome/starter item. Again, I’d say the vibe overall is closer on the Mexican side of restaurants, so one might expect chips and salsa…but despite this seeming oddity, I’ll admit I enjoyed them. They were golden brown, slightly sweet and slightly savory, and came with a tasty dipping sauce. I ate several.
They have a lunch menu with reasonable pricing following a typical pattern of entree + one side (dinner portions come with two sides). I was feeling unadventurous and wound up getting chicken tenders and fries, as I thought the tenders looked pretty good in a picture I’d seen on Yelp. I asked for some ranch to dip in.
My food was fresh at least in terms of temperature – almost scaldingly so. I got a strong frozen-fried vibe from both fries and tenders, though. Less a crime with the fries, and these were salted nicely and not too greasy. The chicken was rather dry and stringy and the breading didn’t really “crunch.” They were ultimately unobjectionable, but reminiscent of maybe a McDonalds crispy chicken strip, which seems a little underwhelming from a full restaurant. The ranch was also not very good – not buttermilk, so not super creamy, kind of bottled salad dressing vibes. Ketchup or the residual sauce from the hush puppies was a better choice.
Overall, not super wowed but not super let down either. Service was solid and the environment was comfortable. Since the menu is so large, I’d imagine there’s something for everyone – and maybe a sleeper hit dish on there, too.

Ate there for the first time today and it was a great experience! They serve hush puppies with a creamy cilantro dip that is yummy. The Tequila Chicken was flavorful and tender. Brussels sprout had lots of flavor and a good crunch. My husband had the catfish and fries and it came with a lobster bisque. Portions sizes were good and everything was nicely plated. Service was cheerful and quick. Would recommend!

What a lovely surprise! We were warmly greeted and guided to a cozy table. The waiter came over right away. I hesitated a bit, as I need low-sodium options, and asked if they had any fish — ideally a whole one.
They didn’t have tilapia that day, but kindly offered red snapper instead. Just as I requested, it was prepared without salt or spices — and it was excellent!
We also ordered the Angus burger — and yes, it really was Angus, perfectly cooked. The pasta with chicken was delicious, and both salads were very fresh, with sauces offered on the side.
Our waiter, Angel, turned out to be not only a great guide through the menu, but also a person with a broad worldview and deep knowledge of different cultures.

Ok so I review sonny places, I’m very blunt and straight forward about my experiences. So here we go
Greeted when entering the restaurant, very friendly staff, quick to seat , take my order, bring my drink.
The quesobrilla tacos were good , juicy , flavorful , cilantro was fresh good sauce etc. The drink i ordered was great , just a 1/2 sweet/unsweetened tea with lemons. They start you off with hush puppies and a yummy sauce. No issues perfect all the way around.
The decor was cool as well.

This place was unexpected awesome. Wait staff was very attentive. The hush puppies with the avocado ranch were great. I had the grouper tacos and she had the salmon BLT and both were delicious. Fish was cooked to perfection.

Great atmosphere not very crowded or too loud you cant hear yourself think. Very courteous staff and promt service. Food was amazing. Surf and turf was the best. Perfectly cooked steak! Medium very tender and juicy! The sauce that came with the lobster was hands down the best. Not your normal butter on a candle but the sauce with flavor and spices brought a different flare with the lobster. Definitely one of my favorites. Will be coming back to try something else on the menu! Another plus is the hushpuppies appetizer. Very tasty with a Mexican spinach on it. Mixed with corn and Jalapeños adds a great touch and flavor!

Most of the food was delicious, costumer service needs a little bit improvement to be perfect. I ordered aguachile it was very sour if you like lime will be your best option, the carne asada was tender, camarones Sinaloa where great, huachinango zarandeado was good, desserts where great. Never seen before robots taking your food to your table so it’s really great idea that way your food gets to your table warm
Also that keeps children looking at it surprised. Overall great experience for me it’s a good place to come with my family.

What a great experience! The atmosphere is so welcoming and relaxing. Our server, Jasmine was so pleasant and attentive. The manager, Shamekia stopped by to see how we were doing. Super nice! Now on to the food! Off the chain! We both ordered the Mississippi Catfish Fillets. Perfectly fried and piping hot and served with Creamy Crawfish Julia Sauce and 2 sides. That sauce could be a meal on its own! The starter basket of hush puppies with creamy cilantro sauce is very addictive. The menu offers a fantastic variety. You definitely get your monies worth. This place does not disappoint. So if you’re looking for something different, give them a try. I vote Best in Decatur Al.

Great food, friendly service and fast, considering they were busy!! Great Mexican theme but lots of great options. I had the ribeye which was huge and great tasting. She had the Raman which was also lots of good and well flavored. We’ll definitely return.
