We were seated rather quickly by the host who was a very nice young man, who sat us in the back room. Unfortunately we were by the window and it was so cold my daughter kept her coat on all through dinner. At one time a waitress opened the back door and let in a blast of cold air causing everyone to gasp, then she asked, “Is anyone warm back here?” To which everyone responded with a quick “NO”. When said waitress came to take our order, she actually sat down on a chair at the table next to us to take it. Seemed weird, but ok. However this table was later moved even closer to our table to make for room for 2 other parties. Now mind you the waitress took our order while sitting at this table so it was already close, so to move it even closer felt intrusive.
Our starters came out rather quickly, but the first thing I noticed, the pizza bread that came with our Sicilian salad had changed. When, I don’t know, but the bread used to be a crispy thin crust with the oil, pepper and minced garlic on it, now it’s more of a focaccia bread, but was absolutely flavorless. The Sicilian salad itself was even a disappointment. Same ingredients, but the salad dressing tasted so much of vinegar and pepper and not the robust flavor it used to have, I couldn’t eat it. Believe me, I loved this salad and pizza bread so much I’ve replicated it over the years since having moved away, so I definitely remember this salad and its bread. I was worried I’d be disappointed in the dish I ordered, their well known panzerotti and its sauce (wow that sauce), but I wasn’t! It was still as amazing as I remembered!
It’s just disappointing when you remember these wonderful foods and when they’re switched up, it’s just not the same. You often hear of restaurants losing quality once the owner passes and I truly believe Mario was the glue of his restaurant. Matter of fact the last time I had been to the restaurant Mario was still there, still smiling, and came to our table and talked to my husband and I and our kids…just how he was. Definitely not the same.
