Excellent food! Portions are a little smaller than other places, but it was certainly enough food and the quality was very good. Food was not overpriced considering the quality. My wife and I will certainly go again.
If you are interested in large portions of average Italian food, Mario’s is not the place for you. You’d be better off going to that national Italian food chain just a couple miles away. They will give you large portions of greasy Italian food and charge you about the same price as Mario’s

Best service!! Reviewed menu & placed drink order & appetizers. Ordered meal for 2 adults & 2 children. Salads served, appetizers & main course in timely manner. Drinks refilled without asking. Staff was on top of service. Our meal was superb. Fresh bread, homemade soups & appetizers. Baby green salad with honey walnut house dressing was perfect. We were out of town for THON and wanted a sit down meal. We were glad we tried this restaurant. We will tell others and be back soon for another fine experience. Thank you!

Arrived late but the staff could not have handled it better. Food was served quickly and was hot. The clam sauce was stuffed with clams along with a goodly amount of cherry stone clams. Good bread. Good service. Nice portions. Price was equal to the quality. Decor looked new. Quite nice. Spotless. Nice wine list. I am going back tonight to thank them!

This is the best meal I have ever had in a restaurant in state college. We were 3 adults and 2 kids and everyone was enthusiastic about their choices. The wine is reasonably priced and excellent. And it’s not noisy.

The seasonal menu always has some interesting dishes that are well prepared. Service is always professional and the atmosphere is perfect when you’re looking for something classy. Also, one of the best wine selections in State College.

I am Italian (as in born and raised in Italy!) and I came to this place many times. The service is good and the food is good too, perhaps a bit too greasy. Aside from that, I would recommend this place. It’s going to cost more to go here than, say, the Olive Garden, but it’s certainly worth it

I will definitely give Mario’s due credit for tasty food, and though we were there at a slow time, I won’t ignore that our service was quite good. Beyond that, most things fell flat. We ordered an appetizer of fried zucchini which was primarily breading, and though it had a decent flavor neither the amount not the quality justified the price. We were initially given just two small herb-seasoned rolls in our bread basket, but when we asked for additional bread we got two more plus a few slices of chewy Italian bread, which definitely improved my opinion of that element. The bread may have been my favorite component of our dining experience.
I ordered polenta with sausage and my friend had shrimp Alfredo. Both were good, though neither was mind-blowing. The first thing each of us noticed, though, was that the portions were quite disappointing. Considering the cost of cornmeal and the amount of tomato sauce served in my dish, there should have been probably twice the amount of polenta in a serving. My friend received an even more disheartening portion of pasta (which is absurd when you’re paying over 12 dollars for those noodles and literally half a dozen shrimp).
The prices, the wine list, and the evident approach suggests that Mario’s is attempting a high-brow experience, but the lackluster appearance of the establishment, equally unimpressive plating, and the fact that the linen tablecloths are protected by paper ones and the waitstaff is standing in the open folding napkins while customers dine means that you’re not even paying for ambiance.
I had a two for one entree deal on my WPSU Member Card here, and with one meal free, I’d say we got our money’s worth, bit for what the full bill should have been, I’d have been sorely disappointed.
If what you’re looking for is ambiance, is day there are far better options in the area with the same prove tag. If what you’re looking for is great Italian food, I’d say the same. If you want really outstanding service, I don’t think this will fit the bill especially well. Lastly, if after you’ve paid good money for a meal, you expect to leave full or take a to-go box in order to enjoy dessert, then I suggest asking for a few bread refills.
If, however, you’d just like a light lunch and a good wine list, and you’re not worried about paying a bit more than you must, it’s probably a decent choice if you’re nearby. If you’re comping lunch on your employer and can order an appetizer, entree, drink, and dessert without worrying about the bill, I’d say you’re the target market to take true advantage of this restaurant’s offerings, but I still think you’ll get more bang for your boss’s buck elsewhere.
If you want Italian in State College, my recommendation is always the original Faccia Luna. I can’t think of any reason I wouldn’t drive a little further to enjoy their superior quality and service at a comparable price.

We read all the ratings – iffy right? The one to pay attention to in all of them was the one that spoke to it being like those good Jersey Shore Italian “places”. Well Mario’s is there – and then some. We went there for our pre-20th Anniversary dinner and were simply blown away by the FOOD, SERVICE and MANAGEMENT. My wife’s martini was Mario’s special and it simply rocked – even a guy would like it! But my veal…it was obscene, as good as any veal I’ve had in Rome or near Venice or Vicenza. It is simply the best meal we have had out in the past year in State College, bar none.

Definitely not good? We didn’t even get to try the food. We went to Mario was seated by the hostess who was very friendly, and was told waiter would be right over. No waiter…we waited for 20 minutes still no one. No waiter came to our table to see what we wanted to drink. So we decided this was not the place for us and we left. Will never try this place again. The place was not packed either, plenty of empty tables.

Excellent food, menu changes enough you are not bored with the same selection. Well prepared and served. Only issue and its a small one, it can be loud in the restaurant when busy.
