We really enjoyed our meals at Maria’s. the best part was they were able to put together an off menu plate for me which consisted of three of their absolutely delicious homemade corn tortillas filled with fresh grilled vegetables, and rice and beans and salsa. as part of the plate. They verified that there was no pork or animal products in the beans and rice and since I skipped the cheese and sour cream I had fantastic vegan tacos. My husband had the Chile Relleno plate and he said it was among the best he’s ever had. On his second trip there he had the steak fajita plate and he said they also were excellent. service was great both times, this is a wonderful local Mexican restaurant. Be aware they do not serve alcohol which was not a problem for us.

Great Mexican restaurant in Custer, South Dakota. We stopped for breakfast while out exploring the area. The restaurant appeared clean. The food was tasty and nicely plated. I enjoyed the 3 egg chorizo omelet with avocado and the jalapenos on the side. One of my companions had the French toast, the other, sausage and eggs. And coffee. Our server was attentive and kept our coffee cups full. I’m in Sputh Dakota at least once a year and can see myself eating there again.

Mexican food

Chips were very average corn chips but seemed freshly made. They were served with a roasted pepper style salsa. It was paired with fresh creamy refried beans. The beans were made with pork lard that made them light, fluffy, and satiny texture. It was a yummy change from a mostly overlooked side.

Filet mignon with 2 cheese enchiladas smothered in red sauce and served with refried beans and lettuce. I was overall disappointed as the 6oz steak was butterflied very thin and was cooked well done. The cheese enchiladas were average as the cheese inside was not melted. I ordered mine with spicy green sauce but it was served with red sauce. This dish was pretty average at best.

Classic pork burrito served with delicious chunks of pork, refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and covered in a spicy green sauce. This was a very tasty dish with all the flavors of homemade Mexican dish should have.

Dessert was a homemade mango cheesecake made with fresh mangos and topped with whipped cream. It was light and fluffy with a slight sweetness from the mango.

I landed here after leaving the other Mexican Restaurant. No comparison. From the welcoming staff who all seemed to enjoy their work, to the cook getting my fajitas perfect, the waitress (Shan?) was also great! The food is FRESH, even the big home made rolls with icing for dessert!

Beautifully decorated, excellent service, great food, reasonable prices. I came in 15 minutes before they closed and it was not a problem. I didn’t feel rushed at all. I would come back without hesitation.

They do not serve alcohol! Had we known this before walking in, we would have gone elsewhere. We wanted a margarita!

We stayed and waited to be seated. Our server did not write down our order but was attempting to do it from memory but when it came out, it was wrong. My daughter ordered chicken quesadilla kids meal, she received a bean and cheese quesadilla. My son asked for lettuce and tomatoes on his tacos and they came out with just cheese. Service was slow. We didn’t get the salsas we asked for. The chips are kind of thick for what we prefer.

The food was ok. The fajitas had all green peppers besides one strip each of red and yellow. Definitely cutting on cost and for $20 I didn’t have a lot of chicken. Tortillas were overcooked and burnt on one side but they were still served.

I’m sure it’s a great restaurant for the town, but just mediocre if assessing nation wide.

**Editing my review after the owner response….
The first I saw no alcohol was on the hostess stand. I did not look at the door because I was parking the car and my dad was holding the door for me open.

With a response like this owner’s I would NEVER recommend this restaurant to anyone. They never even addressed all the errors made with our order. Go elsewhere!!

Unfortunately their beans have lard so not for vegetarians. However the waitress suggested a veggie burrito without beans and it was good. Wish they could have vegetarian friendly options and some vegan chocies too.

Ordered fajitas. Good flavor except foe the chicken. Did not see or taste any marinade or seasoning. Tasted like a plain chicken breast chopped up.
Homemade tortillas are great. Too small though and they charge for extras. 3 with the meal aren’t near enough to single up.
Refried beans and rice were plain tasting, as well.
Waitresses was awesome and very attentive.
May give another try on our next visit to check for improvements.

We stopped at Maria’s Mexican Food Truck in Custer for a quick bite. The menu didn’t have many options for meats. Just beef, chicken, and pork. So, for vegetarian options, they have zucchini. We were really disappointed at the portions for thr price, after being used to Mexican food in other cities. The taco plates were $12 for three tacos, beans and rice. They had no option to just buy tacos. The tacos came with one tortilla and half the amount of meat we have come to expect, so it looked like when I make two tacos out of one with two tortillas. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Also, they dont have the different salsas in bottles for your tacos. You get one salsa, and have to chose it when you order. We got orders of carne asada tacos, and the meat tasted like reheated from yesterday. The rice had good flavor, but it was mushy. The kids got chicken quesadillas, but they were one small flour taco sized tortilla with yellow cheese. We also ordered the ultimate nachos. I didnt get a photo of those but they were as sorry as could be.

The plates were delicious, but a bit small. My kids seemed to be still hungry after clearing their plates, perhaps they are going through another growth spurt. It is a cute place and we went around 2pm on a Tuesday and no one else was in the restaurant. I liked it.
