Pizza –
Thin crust, well baked, with Parmesan cheese generously sprinkled around the outside. Inconsistent edges ranging from 1/4 inch to 1 inch.
Cheese is outstanding in taste, consistency and portion size. In my opinion, best cheese in the city of Marysville.
Sauce was, as requested, light in quantity and left no real impression. I will probably order again with “normal” amount.
Cuts were sloppy and varied in size. Actually not a huge deal in this instance, some people in my family wanted a large piece, some wanted a small.
Temperature as received was not impressive. the pizza was room temperature (while covered) inside, roughly, 15 minutes.
Side note, the picture provided was as received, I didn’t drop or shake the pizza on my way to the kitchen. I brought it in and opened the box.
Overall Impression – With it’s unintrusive crust, the real star of this pizza, the cheese, was allowed to shine. Again, very impressive portion of cheese, and if other toppings are used as liberally, Marco’s has great potential.
Sub –
Bread – Soft and warm, well suited as to not fall apart, yet not too doughy or crunchy. Actually impressive for a bread. A bit soggy in a couple areas, but attributed to the type of sub (Italian) and the dressing used.
Italian dressing – Perhaps a bit nit picky, I found there was a bit too much dressing used. Typically I order “light” (as in amount used, not caloric) because I find many places ruin an Italian sub with dressing as it overpowers other flavors with it’s bold presence. I like to see Italian dressing used in a complimentary fashion to other flavors. It should be noted that the amount used was not dripping with every bite, but a napkin would be recommended.
Portions – Marco’s shines when it comes down to the meat, cheese, and veg of the sub. The bread to filling ratio was impressive. Almost every bite was a mouthful of actual sub ingredients and not a loaf of bread.
Temperature – Again, like the pizza, just not what I would consider hot. The meat was cooked, the cheese was melted, so I’m not overly concerned because I didn’t get a chance to burn myself. That said, 15 – 20 more degrees wouldn’t have hurt either.
Overall impression – While Marco’s has the meat to bread ratio sanctification nailed I still consider the sub to be relatively “small”. At no thicker than 1 1/4 inches, it’s the 1/8 of an inch bread that can still sell it and win me over.
Value – At $20 for both a XL pizza and a 6 inch sub, prices are competitive for the area. The pizza is sufficient to feed 3 – 4 (@3 slices each), while the sub was sufficient for a single serving light hunger. Bottom line, nothing remarkable either way. Not a bargain, not expensive.
In my opinion, Marco’s has room for improvement….luckily for me, however, it’s in areas that can be overlooked or glazed past so long as other criteria are met. 3 stars for being a standard “run of the mill” pizza shop, +1 star for the amazing cheese. The cheese has flavor and texture that excites me. The sub, while on the smaller size, was packed full of what really counts….flavor. Personally, I think Marco’s is nuts for opening in Marysville. I’ve never lived in another city so pizza saturated as Marysville. I welcome them to town and hope they do well. That said, with local favorites like that place Ben owns, or corporate favorites (toes and shack), Marco’s may have to step up production times and raise standards a bit to win over this pizza-centric city. Marco’s may not be the next place I order pizza from, but with this initial impression, they have, without a doubt, earned a place in rotation.
