Yesterday was one of those days.
I was in town for a job interview, and decided to grab lunch at Marcella’s. I ordered a braised veal meatball and the penne alla arrabiata.
First off, the meatball, it was fantastic. It should be a requirement for everyone to try their veal meatball the first time visiting Marcella’s. It’s expensive, but it’s large enough to be a meal by itself.
Their meatball is incredibly tender. To use an overused phrase, it melts in your mouth. It’s loaded with seasoning and topped with a healthy amount of cheese. The marinara that covers it is absolutely delicious.
Get the meatball. I repeat, get the meatball.
The penne alla arrabiata was delicious. I have ordered it a few times. I like it because it has a bit of heat to it. It’s not overbearing, but it definitely warms your mouth.
I’ve never had a bad experience at Marcella’s, and I’ll be back for sure. And without a doubt, as always, I’ll order another meatball.
Our most recent meal was a SHOCKING 180° turn around from the stellar italian food and service that we’ve come to appreciate and expect.
The bread was chewy and not very fresh feeling once it had cooled to room temp. The lamb gnocci was tough and dry. The chicken in my tortellini was slimy, grey, and tasted like it was frozen and thawed then sat in a warmer for a while. The food also came out suspiciously fast. We opted to not get dessert this time but i still got my affogato and he got a hot chocolate. The affogato was first delivered as just a scoop of ice cream in a cup with nothing else, and when we were delivered an actual affogato, instead of the warm, rich espresso with the gelato spooned onto the sides of a mug (which i had gotten previously), i got what tasted like watery, cold espresso (or even a cold brew honestly) with a scoop of slightly freezer burnt ice cream plopped in. In addition, after getting gome, we were both VERY sick, but me more than my partner
We weren’t looking for a meal comp but the manager kind of foisted it upon us (and it was either a comp or sending us home with more food, even though we had just finished explaining how disappointing the food was). We were only looking to give feedback about how shocked we were at the sudden and sharp quality decline. Its not like we WANT to be disappointed by our favorite, regular, and sentimental restaurant. Honestly the manager sounded very insincere and like she just wanted to “make us happy” and leave, and she was defensive about all of our very valid concerns and feedback and i am not at all confident that our concerns were taken to heart
Im not sure what caused this sudden and sharp decline, however, my guess is different management. I sadly cannot recommend marcella’s anymore, especially not for the price of $13 for an appetizer and $21 minimum for an entree. And ESPECIALLY not after getting me sick
This is really sad to see, i hope management reads this and turns around whatever changes happened this past year or so to cause such a steep decline in quality and service
We were disappointed in the lack of fresh tomatoes on the bruschetta and even with the burrata. It showed a slight bit of laziness on behalf of the kitchen, Italian food usually prides itself on fresh tomatoes and basil especially regarding these two dishes. It was still enjoyable but we would have preferred fresh tomatoes.
I’ve ate solo at the bar, brought dates here and celebrated my kids birthdays here.
Solid menu, great wine selection, I’ve always thought the staff were well trained.
It can get loud on a Friday/Saturday night but nothing that would stop me from booking a table.
As for food it was good for most people at the table. My food had watery sauce at the bottom. The desert was nice looking but nothing special. Bruschettta was closer to a chessey garlic bread. Not a traditional version. It did taste good but not what was expected.
