Amazing!!! If you want great soul food and large portions with great sincere customer service come here! We loved everything from the banana pudding, oxtails, smothered pork steak, mac and cheese, rice and gravy, cornbread, mixed greens, and candied yams. Feels like your sitting at your family’s dinning room table because of the hospitality. They’re only opened on Sundays so be ready. Also, if you eat your entire plate, you’re a big back because the portions are more than enough and my husband and I both had left overs and we love to eat and both came with empty bellies. Lol. Would definitely return if we’re in the area again!

Mandela Soul Food – Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)
First time trying this spot. The cashier was very nice, the vibe was cozy, and the price was accurate (they rang me up on a calculator, no games). I spent about $79 total including tip.
Food:
• Oxtails (9/10): Flavorful and tender, but not something I’d reorder here.
• Mostaccoli (9/10): I really liked it, but I know it won’t be for everybody.
• Cheesecake (10/10): Perfect.
• Potato Salad (8/10): Solid, but not the best.
• Mac & Cheese (7/10): A bit unusual, almost too busy.
• Yams (5/10): Overly sweet.
• Dressing (4/10): Mushy and too sweet.
• Green Beans & Cornbread: Missing.
Overall:
Cheesecake and mostaccoli were the standouts. Some sides missed the mark, and I was disappointed about missing items. I’ll come back, but I won’t spend as much — and I know what not to order next time.

they catered my aunt’s homegoing at Saint Paul AME Church. The repast was out of this world. Catfish, fried chicken wings, barbecue chicken, and those GREENS! The yams were yamming too.
go ahead and get a plate, you won’t regret it

My partner and I were really disappointed with our experience at Mandela’s. After ordering our food, we noticed that the chicken was not cooked thoroughly — it was visibly red and bloody on the inside. Concerned, we brought the food back to the restaurant to speak with the chef, Mandela. Unfortunately, instead of listening, he was extremely rude and dismissive.
When we explained that the chicken tasted fishy, was overly greasy, and did not seem safe to eat, he responded by trying to lecture us, saying, “I don’t know if you cook chicken, but this is how it’s supposed to look.” It clearly was not. We also mentioned that the chicken our sister received earlier that day looked completely different — darker, seasoned, and fully cooked — while ours was pale, greasy, and undercooked. Even after showing a photo, he insisted everything was the same, when it clearly wasn’t.
We weren’t trying to argue; we only wanted to bring the issue to their attention so no one else would get sick. Instead, we were talked to as if we didn’t know what we were saying. The sides were decent, but the overall experience was awful. No customer should be made to feel belittled or challenged when raising a valid concern. A simple acknowledgment and solution would’ve gone a long way, but that was not the case here.
We won’t be returning.

Nothing less than amazing. I wouldn’t say the food is pricy because you get what you pay for, he isn’t skimpy on the sides. I got a lamb chop plate and it had FOUR large sides for $40 and corn bread? That’s a bargain. Food is high these days. My significant other got the chicken plate. Everything was delicious, fresh, seasoned well. Chef even came out himself when I was concerned about the sauce for the lamb chops and brought me an extra side of it. You can tell he really cares about his business and the hostess was very kind as well which was refreshing. Place gave luxury, super clean and beautiful. Some of the best soul food I’ve had in the city and the presentation was amazing as well. Quick too for the food to be fresh.

Came here from The Bahamas after watching good reviews on YouTube was very disappointed. Were a mixed raced family keep in mind, server was very rude and dismissive but kind with others of darker complexion. Food was horrible … mac was terrible bright orange in color. Husband has a severe pork allergy we asked if there was any pork in the meal and the lady said no come to find out there were pork sausages in the beans and rice and he couldn’t eat his 40 dollar plate. We were given number 5 when we ordered 6,7,8,9 and 10 were called before us. Very disappointed in this meal and service wouldn’t recommend to my dogs

I spent well over $50 and baby I tell you I will only go back for chicken if that! The dressing not cornbread it’s stove top, the mashed potatoes was nothing but garlic tasting (like the whole jar of minced garlic)which really messed up the whole plate! I believe I was suppose to get 5 pieces of chicken wings and only got 3! However this was my first time and last! It was clean in the inside and elegant inside so I gave it 5 stars for that and the service..

Although the atmosphere is nice the food is truly horrible. I only got sides because I’m vegetarian so they gave me a scoop of each. Old Mac n cheese you could tell it’s been sitting for hours, and very salty mash potatoes and dressing. The only thing good was the candied yams which they only gave me three pieces of…. First and last time.

One word….AMAZING!!! The host Temeka was extremely pleasant, welcoming & very well put together. The decor of the place was absolutely beautiful & gave a “royal” feel. We had baked chicken, dressing, greens, macaroni, sweet potatoes, meatloaf w/brown gravy & mostacoli. Everything was absolutely DELICIOUS!!! The chef even peeped out for a second to speak to the guests. I was very impressed overall & will definitely be back for more!

Food was overpriced, had to wait like 35 minutes for 1 pork chop and 2 chicken wings to be fried. Didn’t have any seasoning on the meats. Dressing was cold and funny tasting, macaroni was sweet and I don’t understand why.Was charged 10 dollars for the 2 chicken wings.Sweet potatoes ok but cold also. Paid 65 dollars I believe for a kid plate and a regular plate that has one meat and 2 sides. And this is why I cook at home and never go to these so called soul food restaurants in Saint Louis these people here can’t cook
