Always loved going to Man Bean when in Halifax. This review is from my visit there in January 2026.
Honestly, they’ve gone down hill or were off their game when I visited. What used to be a 4.5-5.0 star place is now a 3.0-3.5 stars max.
I started with the salad rolls and they were not fresh….it was like they were made the day before…the rice paper was so, so dry. They were not good.
The pork vermicelli dish was tasty, but I forgot how confusing their menu was and forgot to order spring rolls, assuming it comes with the dish (again I blame the menu, but the server did not even ask if I wanted spring rolls…double fail on both my part and his part). When I asked if I could have spring rolls, I was told it would take 10 minutes. No thanks.
I will try somewhere else next time. There appears to be a new place close by…Pho Maniac. Yeah, will give them a try instead the next time I’m in Hali.

I ordered the ‘Chicken Rice with Lemongrass’ it was absolutely delicious. The chicken was tender and perfectly seasoned, served over fluffy rice with a refreshing side of crisp salad. I especially loved having the Sriracha and fresh chilies on hand to kick up the spice to my liking I said I’m from Thailand, he served me a fresh chili

The Vietnamese Sweet and Sour Soup, Rice with Braised Short Ribs, and Rice with Curry Chicken and Veggies were all nicely prepared with fresh ingredients. Everything was tasty, and the service was excellent. I will go back.

Liked the clean ambiance at first glance. Food was tasty and quantity was good. Stuffs were courteous but not very chatty. Although I wish they had more Vietnamese beverages. The only one available is ice coffee. It is nice and looks very traditional. Skip the hot sauce if you are not used to the spices. It was a nice find, very conveniently located. Will come back to try other dishes.

Today’s lunch was bun bo Hue and salad rolls. I’m lucky I could drop by this restaurant on my way home. It means I can enjoy delicious Vietnamese food whenever I want. The moment I got into the restaurant, I felt a cozy and very clean atmosphere. The owner’s service was friendly and fast. The noodle soup was enough to taste traditional Vietnamese food, and the salad rolls were spot on. It is worth a visit, and I plan to visit again to try a vermicelli bowl and banh mi.

I got the Spring Rolls and House Special Phở (I requested no noodles because of dietary restrictions and the owner was very accommodating). Both dishes were authentic and delicious! Nothing better than a hearty bowl of soup to warm up on a crisp day

Lovely food. The broth was very tasty. Water given with ice. Plenty of meet included and noodles. Very enjoyable.

Loved it! I live nearby so I’ve walked by this place probably over 100 times now. I went for the first time tonight and it lived up to every expectation I had. It’s so cute inside. Twinkly lights, a little diffuser, candles… it was so nice. It was clean and the service was friendly and fast. I loved my vermicelli bowl and the veggie spring rolls were fantastic. I’m so excited I live so close! Just disappointed it took me so long to get here.

A quaint eatery whose atmosphere is calm and bright.
I enjoyed curry with rice and vegetables. It was delicious. Healthy portions and excellent value. I’d eat here often if I were a resident of Halifax.

Man Bean is a wonderful little Vietnamese restaurant just a couple of blocks from the waterfront. We thoroughly enjoyed the food there and the conversation with the owner (not sure if he was the owner or the manager?). He was so kind and gave us lots of great advice for where to spend our time while we were visiting Halifax.
The food was delicious! I had the vermicelli bowl with grilled pork on both of our visits (yes, we ate there twice over a week’s time 🙂 and my husband also tried the curry chicken – both were DELICIOUS!
No, it’s not on the waterfront, but it’s very close by and the prices are much more reasonable than what’s available on the waterfront. I recommend eating there for lunch or dinner and then getting dessert on the boardwalk.
