Bright cafe with a patio serving Italian fare & homemade breads amid brick walls & local artwork.

Our son goes to Western Washington University and we love to take him here. My dad is from Chicago and very judgmental of pizza and he says that they have the best pizza in the state of Washington that he is tasted so far. So that is huge praise. They have excellent mixed drinks and a very friendly staff.

Great common Italian cusine is offered and prepared well. They are consistent and fairly priced with good service. The neighborhood is interesting and worth an after meal walk.

I had a great time with my family here. We ate a dinner and I ordered a glass of red wine. Very good wine. Vongole pasta had tasty garlic taste sauce and just good with my wine. Chocolate cake was good. People working there were friendly. Great pasta restaurant

Nice atmosphere and service was ok. My fault for not knowing that when you make a reservation you must select a booth or table. The food just didn’t do it for us. I was expecting more italian flavor but it was just too american for my liking. The tiramisu dessert had tons of flavor, but they missed out on that italian flavor I was looking for with the entrees and appetizer. I guess I can only find that Italian flavor in Anacortes.

We have been in Bellingham for four years but had never been to Mambo Italiano Cafe. I don’t know why…maybe because of the less than serious name. It is actually a song from the 50’s…..that I can’t seem to get out of my head right now. Anyway, our mistake.
Since it was an anniversary dinner I made reservations on their service “Rezy”. It worked well, including texting me an hour before we were due to arrive.
The place reminded me of more of an old school family Italian place, with lots of classic Italian dishes, reasonably priced and tasty. The menu descriptions of the dishes are helpful for those who might not know the what’s in them. All ingredients are listed. My wife had Pasta Pomadoro, which she loved. I had Pasta Carbonara. It was quite good and as a cook, I know Carbonara is a tough recipe to get right because you are using eggs and cream. The servings were large.
The wine list is small, but prices are also very reasonable. We had a bottle of Montepulciano. It was good, particularly at an under $40 price point. Mambo does something else I eally like with their wine list. They list full descriptions of the character of each wine. No more describing to a server what you like a wine to taste like and hoping they get it right.
The atmosphere is not fancy, its homey. We were in the front room, which was crowded, but comfortable.
Our server was excellent. I did not get her name, but she had an Amy Winehouse tattoo on her arm.
Mambo Italiano is an unpretentious restaurant in a time where being hip often leads the way. The word that keeps coming to mind regarding the overall experience is “comfort”. We will definitely be back to Mambo Italiano Cafe.

Cute little place. We went out for a drive and ended up here. The staff was polite and the food was pretty good. We had the tortellini and fettuccine. I am probably more picky than most on my alfredo sauce, but theirs wasn’t too bad. We ended up sharing both our dishes and enjoyed them. If we were in the area again (we are not from around here) we would probably stop by and try another dish. Not because we didn’t like our food, but because there were a lot of options on the menu that looked good.

I had a strange experience here with my waitress on Valentine’s day. Our service was noticably different than the tables around us, we were given pretty basic service (seated, give water, order taken, no rudeness or anything but no niceties – it was Valentines day so we thought maybe they were busy/stressed preparing for a holiday shift, even though the restaurant was half empty at the time as they had just opened). But we noticed other tables right next to us were getting much better service, with a lot more niceties/kindness from the same waitress. For example: we were asked directly what we wanted to eat, other tables were asked if they were ready to order, if they would like appetizers to start, if they wanted anything to drink besides water. When our food came she set it down and walked away, while other tables were offered fresh ground pepper and parmesan and asked how everything was. We were never checked on until it was time for the bill, while she was attentive to other tables around us. The food itself was decent, but I spent the meal wondering if we did something wrong or offended the waitress somehow. It felt weird and that (unfortunately) became the most memorable part of the meal.

We’ve come here several times since moving to Bellingham, and every time the food has been really great. It’s one of those places we’d definitely take our friends to eat if they visit Bellingham.
The pasta is always cooked so perfectly, the sauces are delicious, and the bread they serve for appetizers is really nice! I’d say it’s a bit pricey, especially with the added cost for meat selections (adding chicken, meatballs, etc to your pasta), but with the large portions, I’d say it’s worth the price. I very often am able to get two (or at least one and a half) meals out of one of their dishes when I take it home.
The service is very friendly and accommodating! So far I haven’t had a bad experience with anyone who works there.
The atmosphere is very warm but lively, with paintings for sale on the wall by local artists. I’ve only ever gone at dinner time, but I’m sure it’s a nice atmosphere during the day, as well.
I highly recommend the chicken parmesan, the spaghetti bolognese with added meatballs, the spaghetti carbonara with added chicken, and the bruschetta. Their Italian sodas & mocktails are really tasty, too!

Mixed feelings … our party of three dined here Thursday Feb 16. The atmosphere was mixed … tight footpeint with very high ceiling, cold breeze from entry door dumping directly on seating area, lots of brightly colored “art” for sale hanging on the walls. Booths were very uncomfortable and tight – booth seats were not pleasing to sit on with deep seat thst dug into back of legs, padding was thin and bumpy, distance to table was too tight so you had to sit with back tightvagainst the seat back … overall all the dimesions just felt off, and the table was fixed so couldn’t be adjusted … I am 5’7″ and 225# and was squeezed into the spacing. This was an expensive restaurant yet no tablecloth, paper napkins and cheap cutlery but $20 to $35 entrees. Service was less than it should have been. Had to ask for bread. And this is what should have downgraded the overall rating to 2 stars … they serve $25+ a plate entrees and $35 (obtuse price) pizza and they have an expensive always on pizza oven that could have be used to bake scratch made crusty Italian loaves, bread sticks, or even pizza crust bread sticks yet the bread they served was NOT baked on site, was NOT served hot from oven or wven warm .. it was served stone cold, and was awful… tasted like safeway bakery fake Italian bread. The mark of a good Italian restaurant (maybe any restaurant) is the quality of their bread and also their scratch made pastas … FAIL on both accounts. The pasta dishes were solidly good but not exceptional. Entree size was large and the linguini vongole had a bright lemony sauce and at least a dozen clams in the shell and but for $28 it was inadequate. The cacciatore had a nice amount of dark meat chicken, capers and palm hearts but was overpowered by a what is best described as a cheap pungent flavor that I would liken to dried “McCormack Italian Seasoning” . The cabonara was good – niw there are two schools of thought – one with egg and cream and the other egg only – this was cream style. It was a bit oily … either from added olive oil or the fat from the panchetta. It was good … decadent as it should be but was a bit spartan compared to the other dishes. Luckily since we all enjoy each others company we had a very nice time, these issues notwithstanding. Obviously leaps better than Olive Garden and maybe not as good as Macaroni Grill … but this should be better as it’s not a canned chain, and truly these disappointments are really not acceptable when spending $25 to $35 a plate.
3.5 stars is deserved, but 4.0 given as benefit of doubt. While I wouldnt say Mambo should be skipped, personally I saw and tasted enough that we would NOT be inclined to dine here again.
