I wasn’t too sure what I was getting into but one thing I can attest on is that I grew up eating Taiwanese style dumplings all during my childhood then I moved to TN from NJ. For years, I’ve gone around the world and have gotten to try different variations (dimsum/gyozo, etc.,) and I have gotten to enjoy some but I always longed for my Taiwanese childhood best friend’s dumplings. I did not think about them for a long time even after going everywhere in the world.
So, I end up walking into this place. Extremely simple menu, fair prices and I held my curiosity and placed an order to try out a few things.
So the dumplings came out, I looked, smelled and I started getting excited. The folding, the appearance! It felt like my old days where my friend’s mom would give us bags of frozen dumplings to take home to enjoy.
Then I bit into it, it took my all the way back. They are exactly what I was wanting to eat that night and it brought back memories. I know sometimes, I get ahead of myself on luxury, fine dining and I’ve had crazy dumplings in Flushing or Shanghai but Momma Yang’s truly is what I’d consider comfort food for myself.
I asked where she sourced and her daughter proudly told me they are hand made and they started in the Farmer’s Market.
This is the type of establishment I will always support! Nashville has too many PE or corporate backed restaurants (most don’t know). I was just glad that Mama Yang is in Nashville and even from being so far away, she is what Nashville is and represents for us locals.
Protip: You can get bags to bring home for yourself!

There’s street parking. Also there’s 30 min free parking in the lot with validation.
We met the owner, the daughter in “Mama Yang and daughter” she was super nice.
This is boba and drinks were so good. The boba is served warmed so the boba is nice and soft.
You can adjust the sweetness of the tea. I like mine with less sweet.
I am Taiwanese and also from Los Angeles. I thought the tea and dumplings was equal to the quality in LA.
Strawberry green tea with boba ($6.50)- super super good. Enough strawberry flavor and enough tea flavor. Get this or any other fruit tea
Hokkaido milk tea ($6.50)- also super good. Enough Hokkaido flavor.
Winter melon tea ($6.50)- very unique Asian flavors. I like winter melon
The dumplings are some of the best I have had and that’s comparing to the dumplings in LA.
I bought the frozen dumplings and cooked them at home.
Mama Pork Dumplings ($10.50 for 10)- was super super good and delicious. You can eat them pan fried or boiled. Both are good.
Get this!
Chicken and Mushroom dumplings ($10.50 for 10)- also super good. If you don’t like pork, this is a great option.
Pork Bao (3 for $14.50) steamed at home.
Super good and tasty
Here are my detailed thoughts: absolutely amazing brown sugar boba tea. Tasted exactly like how it was in Taiwan, at Xing Fu Tang in Ximen district. I don’t usually like boba in the US due to the excessive sugar and gross boba pearls but the homemade tapioca here is amazing and boba is 10/10 overall. Highly recommend.
The pork dumplings were very good. I don’t mean this in a negative way- they were not particularly out of this world, but they tasted homemade, just like how my family makes them, and scratched my itch for homemade chinese/taiwanese food. Very solid 8/10, would 100% come eat again.
As I’ve seen some other reviewers comment this as well, I feel the need to also note this: do be wary of the predatory Metropolis parking lot that automatically scans your plate and takes $10 even if you drive in for picking up food.
Overall experience was a 10/10 and I think this restaurant is easily one of the best asian dining experiences I’ve had in the Nashville area. Hope to see more success in the future and look forward to dining here more often! 🙂
My order: Cucumber salad, 10 pork dumplings, and brown sugar milk tea
I also met the owner, Grace, and she is SO nice and you can tell she takes great pride into running this restaurant.
Pro tip… after dinner you can walk around the NEW Neuoff District with pretty cool scenery + shops.
If your local, or just visiting for the week THIS IS A MUST TRY!!!!!!
