Born and raised in Ridgeland, SC and now residing in Bluffton, Joy Mitchell has always been a daughter of the Low Country. Her journey began long before she would even realize it while at the side of her mother, Ann Mitchell affectionally known by all as “Mama Ann”. She taught her all of her unique cooking techniques and recipes. During the Covid pandemic, as businesses and restaurants shuttered, friends and family began asking Joy to cook them some of their favorite meals. Inspired by this and the memory of “Mama Ann”, “Mama Joy” and Mama Joy’s Kitchen were born with the sole purpose of providing friends, family and strangers alike a taste of what “Mama Ann” provided to so many for so long, food for the soul.

We were visiting Hilton Head for New Years and wanted to find a good Soul Food restaurant and found this little place. We were greeted by Mike our waiter that took great care of us. I ordered the pork chops who they were good and huge. The collards were seasoned so good! My husband got the special for day and it was awesome! The highlight was meeting Mama Joy! She was so warm and welcoming. We will definitely comeback when we come back to visit!

So glad I stopped in. The blackened whitefish was delish. The aroma leaps off the plate. The okra & tomatoes was piping hot and a perfect side. Don’t pass this place by and enjoy down home cooking.

This is a hole in the wall bar that could be great, but they are not. The food was good, but they give you half a piece of cornbread, and the two fried pork chops came with one and a half. It was actually cut in two. The chicken and livers were cooked perfectly. If they would clean up a little and replace the carpet that was wore out in 1968, this could be a great place.

Mama Joy’s Kitchen is a hidden gem and we enjoyed some of the best food we’ve ever had in Hilton Head! We tried the oxtail and grilled chicken platters which were extraordinary. The proteins were tender, juicy, and full of flavor, as were the sides. Definitely get the peach cobbler to end your experience! April also gave the best service we have had on the island. Thanks for an excellent meal!!

The food was very good. Turkey wings 10/10 veggies 8/10 only because they had a sweet taste to them max n cheese 7/10 could be a little creamier. Meatloaf 5/10 has too much filler and not enough meat. Overall meal was still 8/10 and the best we had on the trip. Would go again try somethijng else.

The restaurant is located in a strip mall. It’s almost as if you’re entering a bar, however it’s a bar restaurant. There is other seating in adjacent rooms. For what may be lacking in ambiance, the food completely overshadowed it. Everything was perfectly seasoned to the bones! The cornbread was delicious like everything else! You will not be disappointed. It was like eating at a family gathering! I dare you to give it a try!

Placed order at 4:57- restaurant didnt have it ready until 6:10. Estimated delivery time when I placed the order was 24-36 min. I only ordered 4 meals- two of which was the same. The dasher was extremely nice and informed me none of the dashers like taking orders from this place because they take so long. Apparently this place is a bar and gives priority to the people ordering at the bar over door dash orders. When I called, the woman who answered was extremely rude.
Now on to the food. Shrimp, rice, fries and chicken were all room temp. (Actual drive time from resturant to my location was 7 min.) Pasta was hot. Shrimp was good. Fries were as expected. Mac and cheese was decent, nothing special. Deviled eggs were good- they had an unexpected sweetness to the filling. Chicken on the pasta was super dry. And the Alfredo was non existent. And I dont even like a lot of alfredo on my pasta, but you literally could not taste Alfredo at all. It tasted like butter noodles mostly with some melted cheese sprinkled here and there. Didn’t even get the garlic bread
Burger tasted decent. No condiments were included. Had to get some ketchup from the hotel. The Red Rice was dry but had a really good flavor.

MUST TRY!!! This little hidden gem is absolutely AMAZING! Everything was super fresh and the flavor will melt in your mouth! I can’t believe I’ve lived here this long and have just now tried this place! Ordered a cheese quesadilla for the little one and then a fried chicken plate with macaroni and cheese, potato salad and a side of cornbread and old man. It is ya mamma food! April was very friendly a and a people pleaser! And the cook was just as great! Came out to help entertain my little one so I could eat dinner and brought him a little treat. I couldn’t be more pleased with this place!!!
