Heard on the Street: A taste of Italy – Shaw Local
Reviews
Server was very polite and suggested options for dinner. We loved the rolls and purchased additional to take home.
We definitely try other dishes and support local businesses…
Homemade bread phenomenal
When the server handed me the bag, it literally felt like the weight of a can of soda, so I knew it was gonna be a small sandwich for the money. I figured if the taste was worth it then it would be ok. I’m fine with paying for food that actually taste good. This sandwich was horrible at the first bite. To start, the bread tasted stale, and the flavor of the sauce tasted like something from a can. the meatballs definitely were not homemade. If they were, they were very tasteless with a strange texture. The sauce witch had tomatoes in it, was put over the meatballs but the bread was soggy from a clear liquid and not the sauce. That lead me to believe the meatballs sit in water or were microwaved. The most disappointing issue I had with sandwich (that I did not eat after the second bite) was that I paid $17 to get meatballs that were cut in half and place along the bread. 6 pieces, so a total of 3 meatballs the size of ping-pong balls, on a 8 inch piece of old bread. Unfortunately I will not be returning to Mama Gina’s. If a meatball sandwich from an Italian restaurant tasted that bad, I can only imagine what the pasta dishes taste like. Very disappointed customer here.
The bread served was unequivocally stale, betraying a clear lack of freshness and suggesting it was reheated from previous days – an unacceptable practice. Our main courses were equally appalling. My husband’s manicotti arrived swimming in what can only be described as a greasy, unappetizing liquid, with the filling appearing undercooked and carelessly assembled, resembling a melted cheese stick. My spaghetti, while marginally better, was watery and the pasta itself was not cooked through. However, the meatball was truly offensive. Devoid of any discernible flavor, it tasted of nothing but old, damp meat, prompting me to spit it out immediately.
The server’s sole offer of replacement dishes was insulting given the abysmal quality of what had already been presented. Furthermore, the audacity to charge the full price, including $17 for a plate of barely edible spaghetti noodles – the only component I could stomach – is frankly outrageous. We were charged $50 for what can only be described as the worst rendition of Italian cuisine I have ever encountered is frankly insulting. Let me be unequivocally clear: the claim of ‘homemade’ is a blatant falsehood. This entire experience was a profound failure on every level.
This new restaurant is a wonderful addition to our community!! The building is older and may not appear to hold a great restaurant, but I assure you the food is fantastic!
Highly recommended!!
The waiter came with the bread and it was ok, best part of the meal. We ordered and our food was out within 5 minutes of ordering, meaning they clearly had it ready before we got there, probably sitting on a warmer.
Our food tasted like it had come pre packaged from Jewel or maybe GFS. Seriously, my tortellini tasted exactly like the frozen bags you can buy there. They claim all over their menu that all their pasta and sauces are “homemade” which is just embarrassing.
Also, everything in the restaurant is exactly as it was when it was owned by China Chef aside from the pictures on the walls.
Just go buy some pasta and jar of sauce from the grocery store and make it yourself. It will be just as good if not better.
