Reviews
It’s near the Santa Clara DMV, tucked into the corner of an arcade complex, so it’s easy to miss. The inside has decent seating and felt clean. Service was a bit slow and our server didn’t seem too familiar with the menu, but it was Veteran’s Day so maybe they were short-staffed. One of the owners, Nagendra, jumped in right away to help us with recommendations, which was nice. The menu was packed with dishes I hadn’t even heard of before (Chicken Mappas? Chicken Varuthacharathu? Chicken Ulathu?). I hope they trim down the menu a bit or add some descriptions to make ordering easier.
Now to the stuff that really matters – the food! We ordered a bunch: Shrimp Tawa Fry and Chicken 65 for apps, then Chicken Curry with a Kerala Porotta, a couple of aappams, and a Mutton Biryani. Portions are generous, so plan accordingly. We ordered extra on purpose to try more and didn’t mind leftovers for the next day.
The Shrimp Tawa Fry was fantastic. The Porotta and appams were freshly made, flavorful, and hot. Just spot on! The Chicken Curry was tasty but could use a touch more seasoning. The Mutton Biryani had great flavor but the goat pieces were a little tough and could’ve used some more time in the pressure cooker. Still, the portion and prep were solid.
Overall, I’d absolutely recommend this place. If they can tighten up the service and get the word out better, I think they’ll build a strong following. The food quality really stands out compared to other spots, and I hope they keep that up.
The ambiance was annoying. There was a youtube video of a crackling fireplace. Idk what the intended mood was, but the place did not look like a ski lodge cabin that needed a skeuomorphic fireplace. In the background, the Uber Eats chime went off constantly, like every 5s. I felt like an extra in a scifi movie given that I was all alone in the restaurant.
The parotta was dry and crumbled as I handled it. This left me sad. The mushroom stew was passable, but I wasn’t going to Whatsapp call my mom and show her how good the food was “here in the US” with it. As a vegetarian, the biriyani choices were commendable – veg, egg, paneer, gongura, but also, why so many choices? What was ulavacharu biriyani doing hiding in this mix? Was there rasam in the biriyani or a collab with the namesake restaurant nearby?
Confused, I ordered the gongura biriyani. The portions were generous. A small African nation could come out of famine with it. But it was heaped so much with the gongura masala at the bottom that I ended up dumping the regular unspiced rice onto my pate and then had to add the masala to make it what the menu claimed it to be. Sadly, the tangy gongura was at odds with the other spices and left me incomplete and with a to-go box filled with my dinner and lunch.
We had the beef fry, appam, porotta and chicken curry. Every dish was well cooked, well spiced and fresh. The appams were soft and fluffy with that slight tang. The porottas were crispy and flaky. The chicken curry was the true winner. The beef fry was delicious too but we were a little underwhelmed by the spice. Maybe we were expecting more spice.
The place was clean and they had malayali songs playing in the background which added a nice authentic touch.
My only peeve was that the cost of the appam and paratta was slightly more for the quantity. They should have given two for the price they were charging for one. Also, rice should have been served with the curry as is practice in most desi restaurants.
Nevertheless I’m excited to go back and try more of their items.
