Maize opened in Champaign on October 1, 2011 and began the effort of recreating traditional dishes and flavors from Mexico City, Michoacan and the mountains of a little farm in Guerrero Mexico. In the process, we discovered the love for traditional Mexican dishes within our eclectic Clientele and we work hard every day to improve their experience at Maize. Our Menu is 90 percent gluten free and we strive daily to share our culture through our food and hope that by doing so we are able to learn from other cultures as well. We hope that you enjoy our version of traditional Mexican dishes, and thank you for being part of the Maize family.

I’d definitely recommend this spot for fresh, authentic and yummy Mexican food. Home made chips from quite thick tortillas were a little oily and not enough salt for me. Salsa definitely home made and very tomato forward and served warm. Hot sauce also homemade but also warm. Nice wide bar with number of seats up front and then an open seating area with mostly 4-top tables. Fun vibe with music playing. Really appreciated the mix of proteins as well as serving styles. The Vulcan and Quesadilla were my favorite. Happy hour deal was awesome – half price draft and also 3 tacos for $10 – essentially any style or protein. Will be back to try more!!

Second time here. Wanted to try the Mega Tlacoyo. Didn’t like it that much. The flavor was muddled. The meat was the strongest flavor and we didn’t like it. However, the smoked mezcal drink was fantastic! The chips and salsa and order of guacamole was excellent! The chicken and shrimp enchiladas were tasty too. Our server was kind! We will visit again when we are in town.

Lunch at Maize: ordered their Shrimp Cocktail. All I can say: do not order it! The taste was good, however, the glass it came in was filled with Cilantro, Onions, Tomato chunks. Where is the Shrimp you ask? Good question. I found a few tiny chopped up pieces of shrimp. Honestly I believe there were maybe 2 medium shrimps chopped up in this large glass of juice. Had to really search to find them. This is unacceptable. $15!!!! for Cilantro soup! That would be a better name for it. Very disappointing. My favorite dish at other Mexican Restaurants. They offer a huge amount of large shrimp in their Shrimp Cocktail. Very sad! It seems like over time their portions and quality have decreased and their prices have increased!

This place is great! The corn tortillas are organic and homemade with local corn. The presentation is great and service was awesome! Atmosphere is very nice too! It’s clean and has a nice outdoor space as well. Excellent food! Pictured is the chicken enchiladas with mole.

Maize is always really good! I really appreciate the staff’s knowledge on gluten allergies. The menu offers gluten free options and they also sometimes have a gluten free dessert. It can be hard to enjoy food from restaurants when you have food allergies but Maize is always a safe bet for me. I’d like to order from the toast app but I’m not sure if clicking delivery reroutes to DoorDash or not? I typed in my address and it didn’t come up either way.
I know “toast” is more business friendly and better financially! I’d pick up instead of deliver but I’m disabled and on some days leaving the house is not in the cards.

Maize is always great, especially the food. We went with a small group for brunch and it was superb. Service was very friendly and the food all the way down to the coffee was terrific. We all loved it and highly recommend Maize. Side note: this was the location in the old train station near downtown Champaign.

The tacos really hold up. The tortillas taste great, thinly sliced ribeye with the melted cheese was great too.
The free tortilla chips were thick but the salsa and all the dips are pretty addicting.

If you are looking for “Americanized” Mexican food, have at it. Not judging (much). But if you want the real thing that is, in my opinion, the absolute best, savory, and perfectly prepared Mexican dishes, this is the place. The Station location also has the atmosphere I’d be proud to take my best friends to! As for the service and the servers, it’s nice to be somewhere where everyone seems to actually like their job! I even had the chance to meet the owner who couldn’t have been more gracious! We are looking forward to going back as soon as possible!
Second Review: This was our third visit to Maize. I rarely review restaurants more than once, but at Maize each visit just keeps getting better! Every meal we’ve had there has been incredible! My most recent selection was the Mega Tlacoyo. It was perfect! Actually, the best Mexican dish I can ever remember eating! My thoughts on this great establishment have already been documented in my previous review, so I’ll simply add, you have to go here if you want the real thing! It’s delicious!!!
