We started with the bouillabaisse, which had a rich, well-balanced broth and perfectly cooked seafood. The French onion soup, however, leaned too sweet for our liking, which threw off the traditional savory depth we were expecting.
For entrées, the Pomme Napoleon was a standout side, beautifully layered and flavorful. The Grand Wagyu Steak au Poivre was cooked to perfection with a bold peppercorn sauce, and the short ribs were fall-apart tender with deep, comforting flavors.
Dessert was a highlight–both the crème brûlée and the apple bread slice with ice cream were excellent, offering just the right amount of sweetness to end the meal on a high note.
Service was attentive, and we especially appreciated how the staff was careful and accommodating when it came to allergies, ensuring everything was prepared safely. The attention to detail added to the overall experience.
A few minor tweaks (like balancing the onion soup’s sweetness) would make this a five-star experience, but overall, Maison Margaux is a solid choice for a refined French dining experience in Minneapolis.
Would definitely return!
I can say that we have continued to come back here and have been treated better than any restaurant than we have ever been repeat customers at. We don’t expect that but they are so kind! And I have had TWO dishes here that gave me goosebumps.
The wine list and cocktail menu also compliment the dinner wonderfully.
I do want to compliment a standout staff member. Jahvani is the most wonderful Host/Event Manager!
Our highlights:
– escargot
– Aligot
– duck confit, sourdough, bone marrow
– beef bourguignon
– scallops
– seafood tower (when available)
– crème brûlée
– Everything is wonderful and we haven’t tried anything that we haven’t loved
Thanks to the chef and the entire team for every incredible meal we have had and every meal we look forward to having!
Unfortunately, the Beef Wellington, which was the New Year’s Eve special and the most expensive item on the menu, did not meet the same standard. At that price point, especially for a featured holiday dish, we expected flawless execution. The beef was much rarer than anticipated, and the bottom of the pastry was undercooked and sticky, which significantly detracted from the dish.
While we understand that French restaurants often serve composed plates rather than traditional sides, none of the entrées included any vegetable or starch element, no potatoes, purée, or vegetables to balance the dishes. This was particularly noticeable with the Beef Wellington, which, given its $129 price, felt incomplete without any accompaniment.
There were some strong moments during the meal, but the execution of the Wellington and the lack of balance on the plates made the overall experience feel uneven for what was meant to be a special New Year’s Eve dinner.
As for the food, some dishes surprised us — both in terms of flavor and price. We didn’t enjoy everything equally. The mussels and the veal escalope were outstanding. The tartare was decent, but serving it on a bun felt unnecessary and took away from the dish.
We appreciated the presentation of the sole and the sauce served with it really elevated the flavor. The cocktails were also delicious and well-balanced.
The food and drinks have always been on point. We love taking advantage of the “choose your own adventure” cocktails alongside favorites like the steak au poivre, which is consistently excellent.
We keep returning to Maison Margaux because it feels like a true escape. We are always so well taken care of – amazing food and service, without any fussiness or pretentiousness.
Bread service is good but nothing special even if the chefs starter is purported to be 100+ years old. The butter, American not the richly flavored butter of France we had hoped to find.
The short rib bourguignon had the tiniest amount of red wine glacee with the beef giving no indication of having been braised in wine, a key feature of bourguignon! While tender, the meat had very little flavor. The vegetables were not seasoned. It was not bad it just wasn’t good.
The steak au poivre was well presented, the meat cooked as requested but the lack of pepper sauce was a surprise. There were lots of crushed pepper corns but just a drizzle of sauce. I’ve never seen a steak au poivre without a reasonable amount of pepper sauce.
Dessert of tarte tatin & creme brûlée were good but nothing to brag about. The espresso bitter with no crema. Overall, we just won’t be back as we were anticipating French cuisine not Minnesotan. And, this is a shame because there were other items on your menu we wished to try but given this experience it doesn’t seem worth bothering.
