This is St. Louis’s premier restaurant. The service is warm and everybody who delivered a dish or a drink to our table was excited about it. You won’t find this kind of enthusiasm from a service team anywhere else.
The food here is best described as “fusion” but the cool part is they’re fusing so many different things. Last night we had a menu inspired by Chinese, German and Midwestern cuisines—the resulting flavors were as comforting as they were creative. Even the most innovative dishes here are grounded and familiar.
It’s also worth noting that they have a great beverage program. The cocktails are sensational. Really some of the best around. They have a rotating Mai Tai that changes every month and it’s always a highlight.
Mainlander is simply the best.
The concept is a rotating monthly menu focused on local ingredients, and they are clearly proud of their sourcing. It is a prix fixe menu with options for dietary accommodations, served family style, which adds to the atmosphere and makes the meal feel communal.
Both visits were excellent. The food was delicious, the service was warm and professional, and the drink pairings were strong, both cocktail and wine. The bar deserves special mention. The cocktails were outstanding, and the bartender had a great attitude and made everyone feel welcome.
I cannot recommend this place enough. It is a must.
We had the pleasure of eating at Mainlander several months ago and still talk about how great a meal it was.
The menu changes monthly and is extremely fresh, creative, and well thought out / locally sourced.
The cocktail pairing was an amazing touch to all the dishes.
Everything we ate was absolutely delicious – run, don’t walk, to mainlander for your next date night / double date / special occasion dinner. You won’t regret it!
We visited for the November menu, which featured mala eggplant parm, walleye dumplings, and a salad with shrimp toast — all 10/10 dishes. The pork steak, baked potatoes, and vegetables were equally excellent. Dessert was unique with a cilantro sorbet; I surprisingly enjoyed it, though not everyone in our group did.
The only drawback is the price. It’s quite expensive, and the cost is paid at booking the reservation. It was surprising to pay $600 immediately for a supper club and wine pairing reservation for 4. While it’s definitely worth experiencing, it does come at a price.
Last Christmas my mother gave us a giftcard to Mainlander which unfortunately due to their move caused us to wait (in eager anticipation, I might add) almost an entire year before our visit.
Not only was it entirely worth the wait, but the meal had us laughing in delight with each bite. The staff treated us (and I’d imagine every table) as if we were the only one’s in the building. The food and drink pairings were exceptional… the best either of us have ever had out. The simple decor was done so tastefully, we loved the bathroom (I won’t spoil it… but be sure to visit). Simply put… Mainlander left us full (portion sizes are wondeful) not just with food but with joy and warmth. 10/10 recommend this place and will be back every chance I have an occasion to go!
