Main Street Cafe – St. Johns, MI
Classic small-town diner done right.
Came in on a Tuesday evening (12/2/25) for dinner with a group of four and ended up with a very solid meal and that cozy “everybody knows everybody” vibe you only get in a place like this.
Food highlights:
The Jumbo Butterfly Shrimp basket is legitimately good. Big, plump shrimp, perfectly fried, not greasy. Comes with a mountain of fries, a little cup of corn (weird side, but fine), cocktail sauce, and a roll. At $15.06 it’s one of the better shrimp deals in Clinton County.
The toasted BLT was exactly what you want: thick-cut bacon, fresh lettuce/tomato, mayo, nicely grilled bread, and a pickle spear on the side. Add-on fries were hot and crispy.
Meat & Cheese Omelette was huge, fluffy, and Toast came nicely buttered and grilled.
Mac & Cheese Bundle looked like pure comfort food – creamy, cheesy, and the kid at the table demolished it.
Portions are diner-generous and prices feel fair for 2025 (our total with tax came to $47.13 before tip, and we left stuffed). They even do the “fries/salad included at no extra charge with a lot of entrées” thing that’s sadly disappearing at a lot of places.
Service was friendly and fast, even though they were moderately busy. Our server Skyler was on top of refills and never made us feel rushed.
Overall, Main Street Cafe is exactly what it claims to be: honest home-cooked food in a comfortable downtown spot. The Tuesday taco deal on the board looked tempting too.
Highly recommended if you want real diner food without any pretension. Support local!

This is a wonderfully homey diner, with understated decor and beautiful natural lighting that creates a warming atmosphere. It’s always a pleasure to eat here, as even when it’s maximally busy, the servers are always friendly and on top of things. The menu is pretty limited in the pancakes/hotcakes and waffles selection, but the eggs, hash, and toast are very good and they have some satisfying hodgepodge breakfast dishes. The lunch menu is better; everything I’ve tried on it has been worthwhile and filling. This is simply a nice place to sit, eat, and enjoy company.

Main Street Cafe is great small town feel diner atmosphere. They have great food and delicious desserts. I’m pretty hooked on their strawberry rhubarb pie. If you make it to St John’s, Mi you have to try that pie…or any other pie! Their cook Shay is a great cook, and their waitresses are absolutely sweet!

We love this restaurant. Great food and our waitress Kathy always does an amazing job. They recently changed their fries though and I liked the old ones better. The new ones aren’t horrible. I just prefer the ones they have had for years.

We were visiting from out of town and had a wonderful experience. We came in on a busy Saturday morning. Despite every table taken, the service was quick and the staff were very friendly. We had omelettes and they were delicious! We’ll definitely be back when we’re in the area again. Thanks for a yummy breakfast!

Food is good, but some of it had been hit with inflation/shrinkflation, and the customer service is subpar to terrible. Ive had it happen twice now where I dont get a drink (as im not staying) and specify i want mt food TO-GO. And TWICE i was brought my food on a plate. And be wary getting various foods like breakfast stuff to-go, since they will leave it messy. My to-go boxes were covered in sticky strawberry juice not just today but other times when I’ve ordered the same thing

Incredible food, we’ve never been disappointed here, and we have some not so easy to please palettes! They are Always accommodate our large family. Main Street feels very home town, without feeling exclusive to “regulars”. We are walking distance from here and for our family of 8 we can have a meal for 70$, 100$ if we go all out.
