Wow! What a hidden gem. Well for me at least. I’ve heard of this restaurant but I hadn’t visited yet until the weekend. The food was amazing, and so was the service. The staff was outstanding. They were genuine and sincere and seemed to go out of their way to make you feel welcome and to make sure your dining experience was great.
I had the meal of the salmon in joloff rice. Scrumptious and so rich. The pineapple glazed wings also were amazing. I apologize if I can’t remember the appropriate names of each meal. But I will be returning in soon to dine again. We attended for black restaurant week. And they did not disappoint.
The decor was inviting, warm and cozy. Though there was a steady crowd, it was still not very loud and comfortable to dine. And still have a good conversation.

I had the pleasure of dining at Mahari and it exceeded all expectations. From the moment we walked in, the warm, welcoming atmosphere set the tone for an unforgettable meal. Mahari’s celebration of African diaspora cuisine is truly special — each dish was thoughtfully prepared, rich in flavor, and beautifully presented. The menu creatively blends African, Caribbean, Creole, and American South influences, resulting in bold, delicious flavors that delight the palate. I had the Creole Seafood Pasta and my wife had the Suya Jollof Platter…both simply amazing! And the Bread Pudding..OMG!!!
Ira Ellis, our server, was attentive and friendly, and he along with the other staff members clearly cared about out dining experience. The cocktails were inventive and perfectly paired with our meal, and the vibrant, culturally inspired ambiance made the whole evening feel like a celebration. Mahari easily lives up to its reputation — no wonder it was recently named Best Neighborhood Restaurant in the Chicago area.
Whether you’re planning a date night, dinner with friends, or just looking to explore something new and flavorful, Mahari is absolutely worth a visit — a true gem in Hyde Park!

Chicago Restaurant Week gave my husband and I the perfect excuse for a much-needed date night, and Mahari did not disappoint.
From the moment we walked in, the ambiance felt warm, intimate, and culturally rich — the kind of place where you lean in closer, talk slower, and actually savor your meal.
The Mushrooms & Flatbread
We started with the grilled mushrooms and flatbread. The mushrooms were deeply seasoned with that smoky, charred edge that makes you pause after the first bite. Paired with warm, soft flatbread, it felt comforting yet elevated. Simple ingredients, bold flavor.
The Lamb Burger
The lamb burger was juicy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The toppings added brightness without overpowering the richness of the lamb. It felt indulgent but intentional — not heavy, just satisfying.
Yucca Fries
Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside — the yucca fries were a standout. Slightly denser than traditional fries, they paired beautifully with the dipping sauce and added texture to the meal.
Jolof Rice & Wings
The jolof rice had that signature depth of flavor — savory, spiced, and comforting. The wings were glazed beautifully, with a caramelized finish and tender meat inside. Every bite tasted layered and thoughtfully prepared.
Mocktail Piña Colada
And the mocktail piña colada? Creamy, refreshing, and perfectly balanced — not overly sweet. The chili-rim detail gave it just enough contrast to keep it interesting. It felt festive without needing alcohol — perfect for a relaxed date night.

Overall Experience
Mahari felt like an experience, not just a meal. The flavors were bold, the presentation beautiful, and the vibe intimate enough for conversation but lively enough to feel special.
Restaurant Week was the perfect time to try it — but honestly, we’ll be back long after the specials are gone.
If you’re looking for a culturally rich, flavorful, and cozy date night spot in Chicago — Mahari is worth it.

Mahari may be my favorite restaurant. The food was delicious with great portions and impeccable flavors. The staff was lovely, ambience and decor was beautiful. I wanted to order 10 of the pina colada drink – it was soooo good. And the bread budding? I’ve had dreams about it. I can’t wait to go back.

Mahari is truly something special. From the moment I walked in, the owner was incredibly personable and welcoming, making my friends and I feel genuinely cared for. The food was amazing, full of flavor and clearly made with love, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It felt less like dining out and more like being welcomed into a family environment. You can tell this place is built on heart, passion, and community. I’ll absolutely be back and highly recommend it to anyone looking for great food and an even better experience.

The first thing I will say about Mahari is that it’s beautiful. Every detail was thought off when it came to design and presentation. I felt like I was on vacation when I stepped inside. The host and staff were so friendly, professional, patient, and attentive. The playlist was amazing as well-it sounded like Amapiano which I love. The plating of the food was lovely- I almost did not want to eat my food because it was so pretty. The atmosphere is welcoming for all occasions and groups. This is a nice place for a celebratory dinner, a friend night, a date night, a cute ans calm outdoor patio feel, or a solo working dinner- while I was there I saw all of the above and everyone looked content and happy. Definitely would love to go back.

I was told to come and experience a dine session here if I visit Chicago so I did. We did have a reservation for earlier in the day we had to cancel due to time permissions. We still took the chance to do a walk in later that evening which I am glad we did. We were greeted pleasantly! Although we had no reservation we were accommodated in a timely fashion. We sat at the bar in the mean time and had drinks. One thing I am grateful for is the level of hospitality this place has, making sure everyone in that space is having a good time and enjoying their food is a big priority at this establishment . Ok so now for the food , bc our drinks were very good. By the way we ordered a pina colada and margarita which each had their own twist to it. Now for the food we wanted to try a few things so we did that’s is how you do it anyway when it is your first time and from out of town lol. We participated in the restaurant week menu, $60 pp which was very reasonable. Hanesha honey naan, mahari house salad, mushroom satay, and pineapple wings to start. All dishes were very flavorful. The mushrooms surprisingly I loved the way they were prepared ,great! The wings had a nice kick to it. Salad wa fresh and the sweet touch on the naan was tasty! For our main dishes we went with the stuffed plantain dish and the pollo n frioles both had a nice kick to it and delish! Lastly for desserts the mon mon bread pudding and sorrel sorbet were so bomb!!! Anything sorrel I love! My friend mentioned to staff that it was my birthday , there was a mini celebration which was so cute the drums and music! I am so happy I was able to experience Mahari it was well worth it !Such a beautiful space!

We came here about a year ago when they 1st opened and had a wonderful time. One of the dishes tasted just like my Mom’s home cooking. A year later we returned to celebrate my wife’s bday they remembered us and we had amazing food and a great experience. The owners are very proud (rightly so) of their resturant and they delivered. Food from the African Diaspora (African, Latin American and Caribbean fusion) ! Well Done!
