It was such a pleasure visiting this place. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, and the soft and melodious South Indian music in the background made it even nicer. The food was fresh, delicious, and cooked perfectly with great ingredients.
I would definitely recommend this spot if you want to enjoy authentic South Indian dishes with generous portions. The dosas are fantastic, and they also offer North Indian curries and biryanis.

⭐ 1/5 – Deeply Disappointing Experience at Mahal Tanjore Ottawa

I have been a repeat customer of Mahal Tanjore, and it’s truly sad to see how far the quality and portion sizes have fallen. What used to be a wholesome, satisfying meal has now become a shockingly meager serving that leaves you both hungry and disappointed.

The meat portion has been drastically reduced — only two tiny pieces of chicken buried in a mountain of rice. Earlier, the pieces were at least double the size, and the portion felt respectable enough to justify the price. Now, it feels like a mockery of what this restaurant used to stand for.

To make matters worse, they have completely removed the boiled egg that once helped make the meal complete. That small touch used to show care and thought for the customer’s satisfaction — now even that has been stripped away.

It’s honestly disheartening that a restaurant in a prime downtown location would take this profit-over-people approach, reducing quality and portion to such an extent that customers walk away feeling deprived rather than nourished.

Food is supposed to be about hospitality and respect — about feeding another human with care. If a business loses that essence, what remains?

Very, very disappointing. I’ve even attached photos to show the drastic difference — this is not the Mahal Tanjore it used to be.

I usually come here for the weekend South Indian breakfast buffet, which I enjoy a lot. Recently, we placed a catering order for goat biriyani (seeraga samba biriyani), shrimp fry, parotta with South Indian–style chicken salna, eggplant gravy, and payasam. Every item was excellent and tasted amazing. The quantity was more than adequate, and the biriyani had a generous amount of meat pieces.

Chef Mani was very flexible with our catering requirements. I later learned that it was actually his holiday, yet he still took the time to prepare our order — truly appreciate that. The pricing was reasonable, and the order was delivered on time and packaged properly.

Amazing food and the experience never disappoints whenever we come here! We have been dining here for the past 3 years and can say it’s the best South Indian joint in Ottawa. The service was great, very friendly servers and the chef came and met us for feedback.
We tried the brunch on Saturday as well as some items from the menu and it was to die for.
Mysore masala dosa and onion chilli raha masala dosa were amazing… will come again with the family.

First time been here. It was quite. Good ambience. Service was great. Food was good overall, the reason for 4* for food was because chutnes were cold and the Mango lassi was not cold. Taste was good. We had tiffin items. Be careful in choosing spicy level.

Definitely the best South Indian breakfast buffet in the city. They also offer unlimited omelettes included in the buffet. The Idli is super soft the menu changes slightly every week. We have tried their Friday evening buffet too. Highly recommend!

Ordered : Idly 65, Paneer Masala Dosa, Chicken Kothu porotta.
Idly 65 was good.
Kothu : too salty, no raitha with it. (Did it usually come with?)
Dosa : Dosa was cold, (masala inside was warm) : was buy one get one as well, so price is okay I guess.
No checkin from server, delivered food and disappeared.

Note: I truly enjoy their cuisine, even what we ordered today. Weekend breakfast buffets are something I really enjoy. However, we did not feel satisfied with the service today. We requested a pickup and a couple items for dine-in. My friend started eating the takeout order without asking for any cutlery. The server approached us and informed us that we were not permitted to open the pickup orders inside the restaurant. We properly followed their restaurant regulation and apologized for opening the pickup order. The problem would have been settled by then, but she continued to taunt us with references to other places and claiming that it would have been a different situation. By the way, we had never encountered this circumstance in a restaurant before. I won’t identify names, however they were really generous in eating the pickup meal inside the restaurant and even assisted us with the utensils. We would not have written this today if she had stopped after everything that had transpired. But she didn’t; instead, she walked to the kitchen and began speaking about us in an impolite and rude manner. We could hear every word she said. She continued to say that for a few minutes. That was both disappointed, insulting, and infuriating at the same time. Is this really how you handle the situation?

We felt terrible, and it put us off eating the food. I apologize for adopting such a loud tone, but hearing her rude comments from the kitchen was quite upsetting. She did all of this after we apologized for the issue and did not make a single harsh comment about it.

The buy one get one chicken biryani on uber is a scam by the restaurant they give so small portion, with literally no pieces and make profit. Scammmm!! I don’t recommend the worst tactics they follow.

We (2 adults and a toddler) went with the Breakfast buffet as suggested to us by the waiter. OMG, everything was finger licking deliciously good!!! I pretty much tried everything on the buffet. Taste was authentic South Indian with the right spice level. Food was very satisfying. Even though it was buffet, Dosas were served hot minutes within requesting for one. Buffet also included coffee/tea.

Toddlers eat for free with adults!

I would definitely recommend this place if you love South-Indian cuisine.
