Absolutely delicious. A gem of Joliet.

Very much a homemade restaurant. We had the pasta dish, the spicy coconut soup, and the chicken salad sandwich. Everything fantastic.

They modified the meal for my 7 year old. They had chalk to play with as well. My son says 5 out of 5!

I want to give 5 stars, but the parking situation and bathroom situation drastically affected my opinion/view of the entire atmosphere. The restaurant was small and quaint and very cozy. The food and service were excellent. The music and the volume to which it was playing was perfect. Someone was even opening the door for every guest. Definitely above value for the price. The only way to access the restaurant is to park across Ruby Street or to park down the block and walk across a different street. The bathroom was shared in a sports bar and was dirty, small and freezing cold. May want to consider your options if you’re disabled.
Also it’s important to note that the dinner and lunch menus are drastically different and the options are not available all the time.

I have been anxiously waiting to try Magpies since it opened and tonight was the night. We had a 5 pm reservation got there about 4:45 thinking we would have a cocktail so we sat at a table and no server ever came to us. Ok strange but the stranger part is that this lovely little bistro is paired with a neighborhood tavern which was very HoT and so loud my head was pounding. The hostess came and asked if we had a reservation at about 5:02 we gave her our name and time of reservation. The doors to the restaurant did not open until 5:12 which would not have been a big deal if the waiting environment was better. We almost walked out but finally the doors opened to expose a charming little restaurant. Our lovely server immediately greeted us and asked if we would like a drink. I am asked about any specialty drinks and was told they have wine from a local winery so I opted for a soda. But then the food started coming. The most delicious buffalo mozzarella hand rolled sticks, potato leek soup that was divine! I had the blackened grouper with asparagus and risotto husband had pasta with meat sauce and a beautiful key lime pie for dessert. The restaurant was a great experience I am giving 5 stars on the food and service alone and I am glad we didn’t leave. for the price point I would have preferred to not hear the tavern noise.

This is an adorable restaurant tucked away in Joliet.

We made a reservation the day before and were seated immediately upon arrival. The atmosphere is cute and cozy, almost homie with eclectic decorations and mismatched plates. You could feel the love out into the decorating. I had the fillet with mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus, and it was an absolute delight cooked perfectly. Everything about my meal was amazing. The server was very attentive And answered my questions regarding my food, sensitivities without any issues or attitude, even when she had to go into the back and asked the chef. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience.

If I could add anything to the menu, I would love a gluten-free dessert and to have what items are gluten-free indicated on the menu.

I also noticed that the online menu is no longer accurate as of this time. I was a bit disappointed to find they no longer had lamb chops, which was planned order in addition to the pricing being off. The pricing difference weren’t so large that it made a huge difference in my budget as a person who needs to plan both for budget and dietary requirements accurate online menus are extremely helpful.

Went on a Monday night around 7:15. I had the dining room to myself it was very nice. I loved the vibe, all the original artwork on the walls was super cool. I ordered the Gumbalaya and it was delicious! My server was very friendly and accommodating, I’ll definitely be going back!

In the ever increasing universe of corporate franchises, this delightful restaurant stands as a beacon of the old school, hands-on restaurant of the past, where the owner is the chef, and the atmosphere is cozy and folksy. Ms. Magpie (a soaring personality herself), owns the place and cooks in the kitchen, sometimes sings in the kitchen to the delight of the patrons, and her hands, as my grandmother might’ve put it, are made of gold. The dishes she creates are sheer ecstasy for the food lover. The hand curated quality is evident in everything put on your table. Please hurry there and grab it while you can because places like this are the dinosaurs of the restaurant business. There is local art on the walls, and art classes are held there, along with a Thursday karaoke night that promises to raise the roof. There is a full bar. The staff is friendly, warm, attentive, engaging. Feel free to poke your head behind the curtain that separates the kitchen and say“good job!“ This unpretentious, eclectic restaurant is something you really must experience.

While we missed Thayer’s, we were so glad to see its staff and some of its food (along with some new additions) return in a unique environment. The burger and soup were just as great as I remember, and we loved seeing art for sale on the walls. Highly recommended!

Super yummy and great service! I got the coconut and sweet potato soup as an appetizer and it was delicious! My mom got the grilled lamb-sicles with risotto and sautéed spinach and mushrooms. And I got the ribeye with the brussel sprouts and sweet potato fries! All delicious and cooked perfectly. Definitely recommend!
