This was originally the location of a place called Sambetti’s which I hadn’t gone to because I was probably too young but I did hear about it having an excellent grinder sandwich from my dad who grew up nearby. First of all it’s really a great place with a fun vibe. Unfortunately the city of Des Moines has been tearing up 2nd avenue for years now so it’s Always an obstacle course to deal with but once you’re there it’s well worth it and there is plenty of parking spaces. The first time I went with my girlfriend and we tried the ‘green elephant’ pesto pizza which we had heard about as being excellent and it really was. Our waitress was Kelsey and she was really fun. You could tell she loved her job. On another night I played in a band there & met the famous Maggie and she’s totally cool and has a great sense of humor. There’s a lot of interesting stuff on the walls and believe it or not a Led Zeppelin pinball machine (goodbye quarters)! All in all a great hang, great food and a great place for listening/dancing to live local music.

This was my first time ordering from Maggie’s, and I was not disappointed! The mozzarella sticks were huge, and the perfect combination of crispy outside and melty inside. The poppers are not spicy, but the flavor is perfection. I wasn’t sure about pesto and artichoke hearts on pizza, but it totally works. This restaurant will definitely be in my regul rotation from now on.

1st time here! Loved the dive bar vibe. Food was good. Philly and sausage sandwich. Fries tasted good but 98% were rock hard. Like legit overcooked maybe. Not good. Sat at the bar. Bartender was great. Clean bathrooms. Overall liked the place.

9/10/25 I ordered delivery and my order was Italian sausage sandwich with double patty. I ordered a side of onion rings. The sandwich was very good with melted cheese. The onion rings were great. Both items had great flavor. They have a good variety of menu items. I look forward to trying other items.

We stopped by mid afternoon for a late lunch. Got pizza and a few drinks. We’ve never been and were so suprised at the HUGE, loaded up pizza we got. Tons of toppings, didn’t take very long. If you see $25-27 for a pizza, just know the value is there . We live close by in Highland park and we will be back! (Sorry no pics this time because frankly we just dove right in). ❤️

This place is amazing! Great atmosphere, everyone is so friendly. Great food and drinks, REALLY delicious bloody Mary’s. They make homemade pizza crust! Perfect place to hangout in Des Moines!
