Our server was fun and helpful. Her suggestions were spot on, she knows the food they serve well. She always had a smile for us, even when the place was really busy but service did slow down quite a bit as the place filled up. Once it was about half full she didn’t ask if we wanted refills on the water or drinks anymore because she was so busy filling peoples orders.
Now, as to the food – overall I’m really happy with the place. The ribs, pulled pork, and brisket all had a good smokey flavor, so it feels and tastes like a real BBQ place and not somewhere that just tosses ribs over a grill. The flavor did a good job of penetrating the ribs.
We started with the onion rings. They are truly home made style with thick cuts of onion, dipped into a good liquid batter (no crumbs) which provides a smooth style of coating with crunch and softness but not overly oily. They also under cook the onions just a bit so they have some snap. My wife and I agree that it is the right way to cook onion rings, too many places cook them until the onion is mush, but this place gives you a cooked but still solid onion.
My wife and I both had ribs. The flavor of the meat itself is really good, and the two sauces they have (mild and hot) are both good. There was a good darkness to the outside and a soft inside meat that I really like. It stuck to the bone a bit tighter than I like for something slow cooked but I didn’t have to fight it.
I also had the burnt ends, which is a part of the roast beef on the edges. I really love the crunch of the char and the mixture of meat and fat. I’ve been places where they pull it like pork, or what you are given is super dry but there was none of that here. The burnt ends from Maggieray’s are easily the best I’ve had to date. They were cubed crunchy nuggets with smokey outside and a soft and juicy inside. I’m not sure how they pulled it off, but it was amazing.
My son tried out the pulled port sliders. He said they were good, but wasn’t enthusiastic about it. Pulled pork is generally what he gets when we go to BBQ places and he found it too heavily sauced and soggy.
For sides we had the cole slaw, beans, fried Brussels sprouts, and the corn cakes, The cole slaw plain and watery, nothing special or to set it out so take it or leave it. The beans weren’t really sweet, and they weren’t really savory. My wife prefers a sweeter baked beans and these “were okay”. The Brussels sprouts were good but needed a bit more seasoning (or some bacon and onion cooked along with them).
The corn cakes, which are really corn muffins, are outstanding. Super fluffy inside I didn’t even want butter to go with them. All three of us liked them, though my son wasn’t happy with the actual corn kernels cooked into the bread.
Finally we come to the beignets. I’m more accustomed to getting the pillow kind, but these were much denser than regular. They were still fluffy, but each had the same consistency as the corn cake but with a crunchier outside from deep frying. They aren’t as sweet as I expected on the inside, there was a touch of sour, almost like they used a lemon or sourdough starter as part of the dough. I enjoyed them, but neither my son or wife cared for them much. I’m going to ask them about the batter next time I’m there, are they supposed to have a sour touch or were ours off?
I will be back, that’s for sure. I want more of those burnt ends.

It has been 9 years and we are truly grateful to all our patrons for their loyal support – THANK YOU for your business.
I usually go for the brisket, chicken, garlic fries and/or the beignets.
