Thank you Josh for making our visit so welcoming and warm.
Amitha – Great service!!
Homemade dessert as well.
Best South Indian restaurant in Calgary. Can’t wait to visit this restaurant again.
Today, I came to try the food and ordered the Chicken Kari Vrindhu and a mango lassi. They offered a complimentary welcome drink, which had a very nice flavor, just like temple panakam. The Chicken Kari Vrindhu was delicious, it came with chicken biryani, prawn fry, fish fry, mutton curry, chicken sukka, salna, raita, and dessert. I even ordered salna again, and it was served piping hot. The lassi was delicious with a rich, creamy texture.
I will definitely visit again soon.
While it has a location in the NE (52 St), it is frequently associated with the broader SE/East Calgary food scene and even has delivery presence reaching into SE neighborhoods like McKenzie Towne. Here is a breakdown of what to expect based on current diner experiences.
The Food: Bold, Spicy, and Authentic
The menu focuses heavily on the distinct spices of Madurai, often called the “Food Capital” of South India.
Signature Dosas: The Madurai Kari Dosai (a crepe layered with egg and spicy minced meat) is the star here. If you prefer vegetarian, their Podi Dosa (coated in a spicy lentil powder) is consistently crispy and well-seasoned.
The Classics: The Chicken Kothu Parotta (shredded flatbread stir-fried with meat and spices) is a crowd favorite, praised for its “proper portion” and authentic heat.
Unique Drinks: You won’t find just mango lassis here. Try the Jigarthanda, a famous Madurai cold drink made with almond gum, nannari syrup, and ice cream. It’s sweet, cooling, and hard to find elsewhere in the city.
Ambiance & Service
The vibe is often described as nostalgic, reminiscent of South Indian roadside eateries but with a modern, clean upgrade.
Vibe: Bright, welcoming, and often busy. The interior design is frequently complimented by diners for being thoughtful and clean.
Seating Tip: If you’re looking for a more intimate or quiet meal, locals recommend requesting a booth, as the main floor can get quite lively during peak hours.
⚖️ The Trade-offs
Price Point: Compared to some of the smaller curry houses in Calgary, Madurai Kitchen is a bit on the higher side ($15–$20 per main dish), but most diners agree the quality and authenticity justify the cost.
Spice Level: They don’t shy away from heat. If you aren’t a fan of spice, be sure to specify “mild,” though even then, Madurai cuisine naturally carries a kick.
Quick Verdict
Go for: The Kari Dosai, Jigarthanda, and the most authentic South Indian flavors in the city.
Skip if: You are looking for a standard North Indian buffet; this is a specialized, à la carte experience.
During my second visit, there was a small issue with the soup order, but the staff handled it very well. They corrected it quickly and made sure everything was right. Their service clearly shows that customer satisfaction is their top priority.
Highly recommended!
