Mad Town Gastropub at Dane County Regional Airport, Madison
Reviews
I got stuck in a major 4 hour delay in the Madison Msn airport and needed to get some food . Typical as it may be , for a small yet convenient airport , the options for food are abnormally limited to Mad Town Gastropub .
I walked in a sat myself down . Fairly quiet and not very appealing atmosphere but then again it’s an airport . Waited a few minutes to get acknowledgment and the waitress came by and gave me a menu . Lunch menu is limited to handhelds (which is okay) . I asked for iced tea without sugar and they only offer the bottled versions of Brisk .
Ordered a mushroom and Gruyère burger with a side of fries . At first glance it looked decent , pictures don’t lie . It was unfortunately so greasy and salty that it was a bit hard to finish . Greasy food before an already delayed flight is not a great combo . Potatoes are obviously frozen and flavorless. What can one do though when this is the only option and stress eating is endured ?
Wait staff appear bored and not interested in being there . Prices are a bit on the expressive side too considering what you get .
I don’t know how an airport like Madison has yet to add a better quality option for dining since I would be almost certain people would pay for better options . Mad Town (Sad Town) is not the one unfortunately.
Last time I came I just took my shot at convenient store grab and go sandwich for dinner. It tasted exactly what it sounds like.
Welp I’m back again. This time was debating between here, in flight food, starve or eat my arm. Decided to give this place a shot and was sat down pretty quickly. Took my drink order right away and food order.
There was at least 4 workers here on Thursday at 5.30pm so plenty of staffs.
I went with grilled chicken sandwiches for $20 and pineapple mint mimosa. Sandwich taste and looks okay on the surface. Some areas looks slightly pink so it made me nervous. I took a pic and asked ai. They confirmed raw and now I have trust issues lol it could also be the yellow lighting above me but who knows
I ditched the remainder of the chicken sandwich just to be safe but I wasn’t confident enough that it was raw to make a big deal out of it.
Service was great. Guy server (Austin W) came back and checked if I was okay couple times. Maybe next time I’ll do a burger instead but I saw a burnt burger picture in the review and got nervous.
In summary, despite all the negative press, I tried this place and it’s not bad. Maybe all the trust issues just in my head but overall
great service. The grilled chicken sandwich is pricey but tasty. Mimosa is $14 for something you can buy at grocery store for $7 but hey if you are the only legitimate restaurant in the airport you can charge what you want. If price is not an issue I wouldn’t mind coming back instead of convenience store sandwich, airplane food, starve or eat my arm.
The price seems in line with airport restaurants until you realize that a backwoods bar in wisconsin has better food at a quarter of the price. Once you see and taste the food, the price will offend you.
For an airport, there was no sense of urgency. We had to request our bill.
Yes its your only choice, but you would be better off buying snacks at airport store and sitting at a table with that.
The other reviews that talk about the poor service and restaurant closing early consistently without adjusting their hours are all true. I have time stamps on my photos. Their hours were until 7pm.
At 5:17, my server hand-signaled “5-4-5” to the other servers (to signal that they would close early at 5:45) and turned the restaurant sign around.
At 5:23, my server put out ropes and turned the menu sign around to deter customers.
At 5:35, my server started flipping chairs on all the tables and turning customers away. He very aggressively would tell them that they were closing in 10 minutes and that they needed to order now and take food to go if they wanted to eat. They dimmed the lights on us as well.
After finally getting my food, a friend came to join me and since they did not want to take orders and were “closing”, she just shared what I already had on the table. We ate for a few minutes before they turned the lights off on us. Our server was on his phone behind my friend at the long table by the flipped chairs, shaking his leg anxiously for us to leave. He would let out a big sign and walk around again before coming back to lean on another counter.
We felt uncomfortable, and the lights were off, so we just got up and left before we finished our food.
The cheese curds were burnt and hard, and the pretzel bites were oily pretzel sticks with hardened cheese for dipping (though I couldn’t dip anything into it).
Incredibly unprofessional and so rude. I cannot believe how the restaurant staff were acting and treating their customers.
