Came here on a Saturday night – Valentines day to be precise – and had to eat earlier than expected, but it was a good time for a 1st visit.

One thing I liked was they didn’t have a v-day prefixe menu.

Parking can be a challenge as the meters are active until 10:30pm. Unless there parking lot I’m not aware of, it can be catch as catch can.

The service was good. A mixup with appetizer getting delivered to another table. We overheard it happen to another table so maybe someone new working.

The menu was varied and changes periodically. We started with the deviled eggs (pictured), which were tasty. Kind of a savory sweet flavor combo. I had the steak frites au poivre (pictured). The fries were cooked well. The pepper sauce was on the side, which was a nice touch. I ordered the steak medium rare and got a high medium. Flavor & texture were still decent so it was satisfying. My wife enjoyed the shrimp and grits which I tasted and enjoyed. I wouldn’t call it deep south shrimp and grits but still a nice version.

Cocktails are well made, and they have a decent wine list with almost everything available by the glass.

All in all it was a good experience and we will return.

Excellent restaurant with great food and better service. The biscuits were 10/10 and so was the steak. Definitely coming back for brunch or dinner!

Excellent brunch – ending with the French Toast was the pièce de résistance! The bar is officially open again too – great selection of single malt scotch! Looking forward to being back… great service as well.

The war on bread continues unabated in America. They did not bring us any bread. I had to ask for it and it took forever to deliver. Other than that. Macon is a charming little bistro on Connecticut Avenue and a good addition to the stretch that is kind of suffering right now because there’s only a couple of restaurants the Greek one and the other one- their staff is not very well trained. They’re really packing the tables are crammed and you are eavesdropping on your neighbors. They should lose a couple of tables. It’s not about the tables. It’s about filling up the place daily and offering good product. Wish them well- not impressed. Soggy fries.

Food was good. Service outstanding. The chicken was great. Brisket was so tender. The biscuits are OK. The Lobster and grits were good, not an okra fan though. Hush puppies were good and deviled eggs were pretty good. The chocolate chip bread pudding was to die for. It was like a chocolate chip cinnamon roll with ice cream. The collard greens were less desirable. The Mac-n-Cheese needs a different cheese. It was just blah.

It feels like the owner is really letting this restaurant slide. Two of my top entrée choices weren’t available, and when I asked about ordering wine, the waiter explained they no longer have a liquor license. Our server was kind and clearly doing their best, but it’s hard to watch them lose out on tips because of poor management decisions. It also sounds like the staff hasn’t been kept in the loop about when—or if—alcohol sales will resume.
The food itself was hit or miss. The Caesar salad had some brown lettuce pieces, and the shrimp and grits, while pretty good, were prepared incorrectly and took a while to be fixed. I understand there’s a loyal neighborhood following, but based on this experience—my fourth visit—things seem to be going downhill.

A very disappointing evening. This used to be a good neighborhood restaurant, but since they do not serve any alcohol anymore it has gone rapidly downhill. My supposedly medium-rare hamburger was totally overcooked and the French fries loaded with old oil and limp. The main course came as we were still eating our first course. I could go on but suffice it to say that I will never return to this restaurant.

This was my second visit to this restaurant. The first visit was a total miss. The overpriced, flavorless Macon Burger was not worth the $21 price tag. We stopped by again last night because we were in the neighborhood. I hit rock bottom. However, the Pan Seared Rockfish rocked me out of this world. It was fabulous. But I returned to the bottom with the lifeless Braised Short Ribs, which was only a single piece of meat, not plural as stated in the name. The side dish of Haricot Verts was way undercooked and terrible. The Mac -On Cheese is not even worth talking about. This place is a southern disaster. Don’t bother to order anything less than $29 entree or appetizer. I have had better grits in a truck stop. The dining room staff was on target. They were courteous and professional. Where the kitchen failed, the waitstaff made up for.

Food was very, very good. Service was excellent. Made me feel like a long time friend in for a comfortable visit. Appetizers were great! Deviled eggs were good but I was blown away by the lobster grits. Pork tenderloin and asparagus were delicious and fork-tender. Brussels sprouts were cooked superbly – partly crisp and partly moist with succulent balsamic vinegar. Wonderful eclectic assortment of hard-to-find bourbons, which my friends enjoyed. I had a draft beer that balanced hops and malt. We finished with chocolate chip cookies better than Mom makes (she does not read my reviews!) I cannot wait to go back. Need red snapper next time.

A nice cozy place for a good dinner. I got the short ribs, Brussels sprouts, Mac and cheese and crème brûlée. All really good, a bit on the expensive side.
