If you’re cruising through Rockville with a craving that only real-deal barbecue can satisfy, pull over and let Mackie’s Barbecue take the wheel. This family-owned gem is slinging Texas-style ‘cue with Maryland heart, and trust me, it’s the kind of takeout that makes you feel like you just sat down at Grandma’s Sunday table.
Let’s talk meat: for around $70 (tips, tax, and all), you get a full rack of ribs and half a pound of brisket that could feed three hungry folks for two days. That’s not just a good deal, it’s a flavor investment. The ribs? Fall-off-the-bone tender with a smoky bark that whispers sweet nothings to your taste buds. The brisket? Sliced thick, juicy, and kissed with just the right amount of smoke. It tastes like it’s been marinating in anticipation of your arrival.
And the sides? Oh, baby. Sweet, creamy mac & cheese, potato salad with a tangy kick, and cornbread that’s got that golden crust and soft center, each bite is a love letter to comfort food. You’re not just eating, you’re indulging.
No frills, no fuss, just takeout that feels homemade, like someone’s been tending the smoker all day just for you. Mackie’s doesn’t do dine-in, but who needs a seat when the flavor stands tall?
So if you’re looking for BBQ that brings the heat, the heart, and the hospitality, Mackie’s Barbecue is your go-to pit stop. Highly recommend. This is the kind of place that makes you want to grab a napkin, roll up your sleeves, and dive in.
Keep it smoky, keep it saucy, Mackie’s is the real deal. ️
Sides are good but are you really there for sides? I really hoped this was going to a diamond in the rough or other hidden great place… but sadly, it is not.
Brisket: 1/5. Really poor. Grey and not properly prepared.
Ribs: 1/5 Dry. Bones don’t pull out easily (as they should with proper bbq) and meat is not seasoned (only outside).
Chicken (smokehouse): 3/5 Decent but no real distinct hickory flavor.
Pulled pork: 3.5/5 Best of the bbq options but not really smoked. Tastes the same as if you put into a slow cook oven. At least it was not dry.
Baked beans: 5/5 Hard to mess up on beans. These are SWEET though, but I like beans sweet so personal preference.
Coleslaw: 5/5 Tasted exactly as it should.
Cornbread: 2/5. Dry. Not enough corn flavor. I saw boxes of Ducan Hines mix… If they indeed used a mix, I would have actually expected it to be better.
What makes this easy is that Mackie’s appears to no longer trim their brisket, and that’s just bad customer service, taste aside.
As others have said, it’s been grey all three times I’ve ordered. But today, they left the fat cap on, giving me about 40% meat by volume.
I am absolutely awful at trimming a brisket and I’ve never left even 25% of the fat they did today. That was a business decision they made to pass waste along to the customer at the price of food, no thanks guys.
We ordered: crab balls, jalapeno poppers, pulled chicken, beef brisket, cole slaw, Texas caviar, corn bread, and the Mac & cheese. They were able to accommodate us and make a vegetarian dish that was not on their menu.
They also provided dinner rolls, wire racks (had to return), and the warmers.
Mr. Makki was very professional and kind and was easy to contact via phone or email.
We definitely recommend them for small or large parties or just to go and eat there. Unfortunately, we don’t have many pictures of the food – but several guests commented on how good the food was and their lemonade was the best i’ve ever tasted!
The less I say about the green beans, the better. However, the Missus (bless ‘er) tells me that they are done in a traditional Maryland-style, so there you have it.
The Kid loved the cornbread- which is saying something because we make plenty of fresh cornbread around our house and we we know the difference between good cornbread and so-so.
The staff were pleasant and had our orders ready to go by the time we arrived.
Shall continue to order from Mackies…
The food was truly exceptional. The ribs were done to perfection. I am obsessed with the smokehouse wings (pic shows sauce on side), and the slaw, mac, and cornbread were phenomenal. Hands down the best spot for bona-fide Barbecue!
