I had read about this place ahead of time, but walking in exceeded every expectation. Everyone working there was incredibly hospitable, and the overall vibe was just so good. I’m a culinary teacher in the Boston area, specifically baking and pastry, and I completely nerded out being here. These pastries are truly on par with some of the French pastry I’ve had in Paris — no exaggeration.
You can immediately tell how high-quality everything is, from the ingredients to the execution to the way the space is set up. The bakery is housed in a renovated vocational school, and the creative use of the space just adds to the experience. It feels thoughtful, intentional, and really special.
We chatted with a couple people in line who live in Philly and said they come here regularly, which says everything — this is clearly a beloved local spot.
And the pastries… wow. The orange cardamom morning bun was outstanding, the mushroom Danish was incredible, the focaccia was perfect, and the coffee cake and pecan roll were both delicious. We stopped here before a full day of walking, and it fueled us up in the best possible way while adding such a memorable moment to our trip.
If you care about pastry, quality, or just an exceptional bakery experience, Machine Shop Bakery is an absolute must. I could have happily stood there all morning just admiring (and eating) everything.
food: always love their kouign-amann flaky goodness. their seasonal pastries are always fun to try. I have not gotten a loaf from here but I plan to do so soon
it’s nice to pop in here for a pastry and next door for a drink!
ambiance: seating is tough but bok bar lets you spread out
service: always greeted by the same guy and know I will be treated to a treat after I order
The pastries and croissants are genuinely tasty and well-made.
The only downside for me is the pricing; spending $25–$30 for just a few pastries doesn’t feel great. If it were a bit more affordable, I’d come more often.
Still, it’s definitely worth trying, and I’d recommend stopping in at least once.
Updates: I visited back with high expectations. But they disappointed me. Bakeries become mediocre. I asked for a bag to bag one bakery leftover. The staff was very specific on what the bakery is to decide whether it should be a box or a bag. I don’t care, I just want to have something to take that thing to go.
I don’t know how they charge that expensive price but still being so disappointing.
Visiting on a day trip with this lovely place in mind!
First, vibes are quaint and cute! It is in the BOK building that is home to many cute shops.
Second, pastries! OH MY GLOB!
The choices are everything my heart needed (I am a pastry chef and love to see what others are creating!)
I snagged the tomato danish and a stone fruit danish (because I am a in season girlie!). The flaky pastry on both was incredible! The cream in the stone danish was a kiss of joy! I ate them both at the shop!
Third, I had to leave with something, cause duh! The blueberry tart, also with cream that, again, kiss of joy! There was blueberry jam at the tarts bottom that just rounded out my whole experience!
Tots coming back when I am in town! Thanks to the lovely homie in front of house that guided me! And the lovely team overall for the work you do!
