Delicious Italian dinner at Lupi in La Jolla! Beautiful rustic restaurant in a really beautiful part of the city. The food was great, we had the beef carpaccio, veal ossobucco, and squid ink pasta. Nice wine selection, we enjoyed the Vermentino. Excellent, friendly, and accommodating service. Love that they’re dog friendly. Recommend!

Just had a wonderful birthday dinner here for daughter. Excellent food, excellent service. Staff is so warm and welcoming. Made the night very special (And reserved. She was dreading the loud birthday song, as I always want a candle. Ty for the candle and whisper of a song 🙂 And thank you so very much for being here. Gem in Bird Rock with the most amazing Italian food I’ve run across in too long.

I was kinda shocked by my experience at Lupi Italian, after reading all the high praise for them on Google and Yelp. I’m not sure if it was an off night or what, but the food was legitimately awful.
My family came here for Mother’s Day. We ordered calamari, lasagna, gnocchi, veal, and pizza. The lasagna was basically a soup, the veal was a complete mess (looked like slop), and the pizza, while it had prosciutto, was incredibly salty. The calamari and gnocchi were tolerable, though the tomato sauce was a bit sour.
I hate to say, but I’d give this place 1 star if it wasn’t for the great service and hospitality from staff and management. Their attentiveness and pep is the one (almost) saving grace of this restaurant.

Very good meal. Fair prices and homemade. Good for families. Nice salads and soup. Many pasta choices and specials.

Calamari – well prepared but inconsistent quality (fishy on recent visit) 3-5/5
Rigatoni w/ sausage and vodka sauce – good sausage but overall very heavy 4/5.
Pizza Lupi – large pizza, soft bready crust (too bready for my preference), good toppings but overall unremarkable 3/5.
Complimentary table bread is soft and a nice touch 5/5.

Our first time here and I’m so glad we came. Best authentic Italian Cuisine we’ve had! The lasagna was AMAZING! Mouth watering and stayed hot thru the last bite! My husband ordered a seafood pasta dish, fresh shrimp and scallops in a red sauce over angel hair pasta. Highly recommend and will definitely be coming again on our next visit! Thank you for a fabulous dinner and top of the line service!

Fantastic food, incredibly kind staff and the perfect atmosphere for us to relax with our two dogs. They went the extra mile to make sure my husband and I enjoyed our evening from suggesting multiple kinds of wine, bringing out a special birthday dessert (which usually doesn’t happen for an adult), and treating our two dogs like special guests. 10/10 will be going back.

We had a delightful evening at this restaurant on a recent trip to Bird Rock. The food and service were both excellent. My father-in-law had mentioned he was surprised when he’d ordered meatballs and the didn’t come with spaghetti, so our waitress, the chef’s niece, sent us home with a complimentary order of spaghetti and meatballs. As we were leaving, she ran out with an order of freshly made bread. I can understand why President Ford had Lupi’s cater his daughter’s wedding. It was a lovely place with wonderful people.

We spent the day at the beach and felt like Italian for dinner. Based off the high star rating, we settled on Lupi. We were immediately seated and received water. Soon after, our waiter came over and provided some meal suggestions. We placed our order and received our food in a timely manner. Based off the photos other people have posted, I have no idea what we received. The Caesar salad appeared to have been from a bag mix and I would bet on my life we received a frozen cheese pizza with basil leaves added (we ordered a Margherita). The crust was burnt on the outside but doughy in the middle, the cheese wasn’t melted, and there was nothing authentic about it. The sauce on my chicken parmesan lacked flavor, the small pasta portion was watery, and the vegetables were lackluster.
I used the restroom and was overcome with a dusty/old smell that made we wonder how often it was cleaned. After returning to the dining room, I happened to look up and the decorative Chinese lanterns were also caked with dust and cobwebs.
I’m not sure if it was an off night but our experience did not align with the rating. I would encourage other potential guests to read all of the reviews before dining here. Had it not been for our waiter, Juan, I would have been comfortable giving them a 1-star review.
