Tried Lumpy’s Restaurant in Cambridge City, Indiana, and it absolutely lived up to its reputation. My wife and I both ordered the country fried steak with two eggs cooked medium, grits, and wheat toast—and it was outstanding. I have to apologize in advance for the lack of a timely photo of my plate; it was so good I forgot all about taking one until it was nearly gone. Trust me, though—it was worth it.
The pancakes deserve a special mention as well. No picture could possibly do justice to how good they were, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.
The service was just as memorable as the food. Our waitress was genuinely funny, and yes, the free sarcasm with every meal is real. We even asked for extra—and she delivered.
Great food, great atmosphere, and a sense of humor that makes the whole experience even better. We’ll definitely be back.

This greasy spoon was awesome! I loved it. It was down home off with a great small town feeling. It was just like out of a movie; small town diner with staff that was a customer then started working there. One of the staff told me that was her. I loved that story. We’re from Hawaii and don’t have places like this…it’s not common place.
Support a local diner that been there for more than 22 years. The prices are perfect! TIP THEM WELL! They deserve it.

As someone from Hawaii where places like this are not common place, this small-town diner was a total delight! This greasy spoon was awesome! It has a wonderful, down home feeling, and the prices are perfect! The service is genuine—I loved meeting the staff member who used to be a customer here. This local legend has been around for more than 22 years. Visit them, enjoy the atmosphere, and TIP THEM WELL! They deserve it.

Great sausage gravy and biscuits. Great tenderloin as well. Get in early for the cinnamon rolls, they run out quickly.

The atmosphere is cozy and the stories are even better—the staff is incredibly friendly and the history of the place really shines through. If you remember what breakfast used to taste like before microwave ovens & fast food (yes, that makes you old) then you know that very very few resturants cook food like they used too. And almost none are anywhere near as good.
Then there is Lumpy’s. A throw back to a time when food wasn’t instant & it tasted really good.
This place is well worth your time. Get off I-70 & take a few extra minutes to find out how Breakfast & Lunch used to taste – it could just be the highlight of your trip.

This is classic small town Midwestern America diner. From the advertisements on the cups to the huge pork tenderloin, to the home cooked comfort food, this is a place where locals come to share food and fellowship. The service is quick and friendly. Parking is a little tricky, but if you scope out the block around it, you will be fine. Also grab a table whenever you can as they are first-come-first-serve and become scarce around peak times.

Absolute gem!
A small town restaurant/diner filled with regulars and a sprinkling of us out-of-towners.
The waitstaff was zipping around keeping everone’s cups filled, taking & delivering orders. Tables were bussed within seconds of being vacated.
My server, Kristin went to battle for me to grab me the last homemeade cinnamon roll.
My mini breakfast was exceptional. I had a perfectly cooked egg over easy, link sausage, and buttered sour dough toast.
The coffee was hot and as good as any diner coffee I’ve had.
Two thumbs up and I would definitely eat here again!
