My first-time trying this historic sandwich and it was delicious! The beef patty was prepared medium rare and was juicy and flavorful, a hint of salt and absolutely NO condiments! Served with or without cheese, tomato & grilled onions… we waited 30 minutes to get to the counter to order, then another 15 minutes to pickup our hamburgers… Very limited seating but customers pretty much eat and leave, so seating does become available. No reservations, first come first served… Felt honored to taste America’s hamburger creator, not disappointed

It you want fast food this is not the place for you. If you want a delicious, juicy, well prepared burger this is the place for you. Very historical building, and the custom cast iron gas broilers are the centerpiece of the operation. Great customer service and quality of ingredients! Allow for appropriate time as it takes a while to fulfill your order. Had a very pleasant time talking with other patrons. Truly an American Treasure! Yummy, yummy, yummy!

Whenever I’m in New Haven, the first thing I want to eat is a hamburger from Louis’ Lunch — the true OG of hamburgers.
The burger is simple yet iconic: cheese spread with onion and tomato served on toasted bread. No frills, just great flavor done right.

The hospitality is warm and welcoming while there may be a wait due to their traditional cooking process, it’s absolutely worth being patient. A must-visit spot in New Haven. Highly recommend!

I thought this might be a tourist trap, but the food is actually really good. The burger is delicious. The potato salad don’t sleep on it. It’s actually amazing. It’s like mashed potatoes mixed with egg salad and the Keylime pie was also fantastic.

A quaint restaurant with roots dating back to the 1900s, staying true to its original preparation method. Medium rare is the way to go—it highlights the natural flavors beautifully. Simple, classic, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Historic spot and a must-visit for burger lovers. Louis’ Lunch claims to be the birthplace of the hamburger, serving the original style burger since 1900 on toasted bread with simple toppings. The vibe is classic and authentic — a real piece of American food history. Not the biggest or fanciest burger you’ll ever eat, but definitely worth the stop for the story, tradition, and taste.

Passing through town and decided to stop at the Original!
The birthplace of the burger
It opened at noon and there was a line to get in.
Quick soapbox commentary … it is super rude for 1 person to get in line, and then right before entering, calling 4 other people to show up and get in line with you … Grrrrr!
Louis Lunch only has seats for maybe 15 people … the rest have to stand. It is has a very limited menu. Hamburger or cheeseburger on plain white toast and your topping choices are simple, tomato and/or onion. In addition, there is potato salad, chips, and apple pie. And, several flavors of soda.
Be prepared … step up and make your order.
Let’s be perfectly honest, its a good burger and it is pretty cheap, but you are paying for the experience of going to the original hamburger stand.
Highly recommended a trip to Louis’ Lunch.

I will preface this review by saying that this establishment is a local legacy and a historical monument. It was established in 1895 and has been family run since then with its claim to fame being that it is the birthplace of the Hamburger. Local people love it.

Now these burgers are no frills, just meat. None of that fancy shit your gunna get in some of the new gastropubs or chain burger joints. They pride themselves in serving a classic hamburger that is made with a proprietary blend of five cuts of meat, ground fresh daily. It is served on white toast with cheese and only offer onion and tomato as garnishes. I had a chance to watch the cook make our burgers and he put it in the grill/meat cooker and the only seasoning that he used was salt and pepper. Now if you like the taste of ground beef then you’ll love these burgers. They were well made and tasted like a nice juicy piece of ground beef but that was it. So would I waste an hour for these burgers, no I wouldn’t. Now if your around Yale and have other things to do then you may wanna stop in and place an order to go and walk around for a while then come back for your order. It’s worth a taste but in my opinion over hyped for the amount of time you have to wait.

Truly amazing inside, the burgers are just great! They’re all cooked medium, no exceptions, but they come out so juicy and delicious.
Price is good, not expensive at all.

Louis’ lunch some of the best burgers I’ve ever had in my life. I feel like the employee should be annoyed at all the videos and pictures people take but they are super friendly. They make great quality food. The atmosphere is awesome because it feels like you just walked into 1922. There is a bathroom and if the place is packed seating could be a little tight. There is public parking on the street out front or side streets nearby and the prices are pretty decent. Everyone who visits New England must visit this place remember not to ask them for ketchup.
