We drove through Utopia and decided to stop for dinner. The atmosphere when we walked in gave the feeling of “Oh, I might get hate-crimed”. There were only white people, and I was the only Hispanic, so I felt off. There were also mammy dolls (racist dolls) in the windows of one of the booths, which made me uncomfortable.

Our waiter was great though! He was very kind. We got our drinks and appetizers very quickly. The sweet tea was really good, it had that homemade taste. The fried pickles were VERY fresh, they literally steamed after we took a bite. They were very good!

I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, and my husband ordered a cheeseburger. I am someone who gets very scared of ordering chicken from restaurants as I am scared of it being undercooked. However, this was cooked perfectly! It was white all the way through, and it tasted very good. My husbands burger was cooked perfectly too, and he tore that thing up!

Overall, our experience was very good. I would just recommend removing the dolls as they are very offensive and racist.

Excellent cafe. Great food and service. Ribeye steak … excellent. Fried okra. Excellent. Coconut cream pie… the best I’ve had. The pie is now my new yardstick to measure all pies by. We met the baker and she is awesome. The chef came out to say hi as well. Yup. It’s that good. Highly recommend.

Stopped in and had the steak and fries—didn’t really care for the fries, but the steak was amazingly delicious. Honestly surprised at how good it was for $27. Perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and absolutely worth it. You really can’t beat it. Highly recommend stopping here if you’re in the area. Definitely Texas road trip travel approved!

Small, cozy spot. I really wanted the lamb sliders but they were out so I ended up with a cheeseburger which was so good. The chicken fried steak was perfectly cooked/fried and the gravy was delicious. Not to mention the pies are to die for. Can’t wait to come by again when we’re in town. Highly recommend!

The food and service here is unparalleled. We met a young lady waitress (didn’t get her name) from Sabinal that was the sweetest soul. Everyone was very nice and the food was delicious. Get some pie while there.

Review: Lost Maples Café – Utopia, Texas
By Hazel Velasquez

Tucked away in the quiet charm of Utopia, Texas, Lost Maples Café offers more than just a meal — it offers a feeling. From the moment I stepped in, I was struck by the unpretentious warmth of the space. The atmosphere is unmistakably homey, with a lived-in authenticity that can’t be faked.

The menu leans into classic country comfort, but what sets this spot apart is execution. The homemade biscuits were, without exaggeration, phenomenal — golden, flaky, and served with the kind of pride that only comes from baking them from scratch that very morning.

As someone who often finds myself repeating the phrase “extra veggies, please” only to be met with a sprinkle of green, I was genuinely impressed. I requested a fully loaded veggie omelet — and for once, didn’t have to beg, repeat, or clarify. It arrived overflowing with fresh, vibrant produce, balanced and flavorful in every bite. That level of attentiveness is rare.

Lost Maples Café doesn’t try to be trendy or reinvent the wheel. What it does, it does exceptionally well. It’s a humble reminder that great food, served with care, still matters — and in this little corner of Texas, it shines.

The atmosphere is nice and interesting. We found a seat and were attended to pretty quickly. The food was good and did not disappoint! The bacon was nice and crispy and the onion rings alone would give me a reason to come back. The chicken fried steak was a little tough but the flavor was amazing! These people have their breading down! From fresh baked potatoes to homemade tasting ranch with lettuce and spinach that looks freshly picked and crunchy! Definitely putting this on my places to stop when I’m in the area!

We’ve had the grilled cheese and nachos as a little snack after a few hours of hiking. Staff and the young lady (owner?) were all so so nice. Sitting in such small towns always feels a little special and this was just wonderful
