Thanks to Briana at the front desk at the Red Roof Inn in Socorro, I had dinner at her recommendation. El Sombrero has recently changed hands and seemed a bit under fire from new personnel adjusting to the restaurant’s style, however the atmosphere in the Covid-friendly super dome was safe and peaceful, the food, my beef Chalupa, and the service, were excellent. I will always stop here when I pass through town.
They are waiting on their license so they can sell beer and wine so call ahead if that’s a critical part of your dining experience.

If you’re in Socorro and looking for authentic Mexican cuisine, give Los Sombreros a try. It’s a nice atmosphere with plenty of seating. Make sure you have plenty of time since the meals are fresh and take a little time to make; however, the wait is worth it. The meals are delicious. I had the combination plate which provided a sample of several items. My favorite was the taco and chile relleno. The Frank’s enchilada plate was also very good.

This was my first taste of New Mexico and their famous green chili peppers. It was delicious. I had a stuffed chili pepper with beans and rice. Mmmmmmm. The staff was very courteous and attentive. My glass stayed full and the waitress had some good conversation. The restaurant was clean and well decorated. The extensive menu made it hard to choose. That’s a good thing. My food arrived hot, fresh, and quick. Just the way I like it. This must be a popular place because it was crowded. Everyone seemed happy and the other customers seemed satisfied.

Ordered a beer, it came out warm. Asked for a glass so I could put ice in it, was given a disgusting dirty glass. Ordered guacamole and asked specifically if it was made with tomatoes due to food allergy, was told no. After a few bites found tomatoes in the guacamole. We have been here for 51 mins and haven’t received our food. Two tables walked out, there is a total of 5 tables with customers waiting…not sure how this place receives good reviews. Must be a bad night? Still haven’t received our meal. All menu items… nothing special except asking for no tomatoes?

The food came out, an order of four soft tacos that took 57 mins came out ice cold and was wrong, in a hard shell. One order didn’t show up and the server is no where to be found… this place is one of the worst restaurants I’ve ever been to.

this is more of a new Mexican food place. the atmosphere is delightful. really enjoyed the decor. the food was ok. they had run out of hot tea. the service was quick and staff very friendly.

December 2020: They changed names to El Sombrero. We ordered steak burrito plate to go. The meat was very tough. Don’t recommend it anymore.
2 years ago: Very authentic New Mexican fare. I was not pleased with the small amount of chicken in the special of the day and it was sprinkled with cut un-cooked onions. My wife’s plate also had onions. We loved the Mexican banana split dessert. Photos are from 2018.

Yum yum yum… it is a great place to stop and have a delicious meal! Literally “STOP AND EAT!” you will not be disappointed. Great poblano sauce, have to try it. Manager extremely fun, and easy to talk to. Great price for the portion and quality of food.

Placed to go order. Was told itd be ready in 15 min but it wasnt put in to cook until I got there. It was not even busy. Maybe one customer. Then got wrong order and it was cold. After eating some, I find my to go box had been burnt through. Unsure if any plastic was in food

Food was ok. Portion was small for the money. They screwed up my order and when I called they admitted to half the mistakes and said I should call the manager in two hours! Horrible customer service and I dropped close to $100 on the little plates. Pretty weak. No hot sauce on request????
