TLDR: Look past the small, crowded parking lot, and older building – this is the real deal. The food and service were fantastic, and the price was reasonable.
Arrived, was immediately greeted and offered to sit wherever we wish. After we sat, was immediately brought fresh chips and salsa (we requested extra right away as both were excellent!). Drinks were ordered.
Food took a while until served, but was definitely worth the wait. It was a quiet evening (Monday) so it wasn’t so much from it being busy, but once served was hot and definitely prepared fresh.
We had:
Carne Asada Fries (some of the BEST carne asada I’ve ever had)
Wet Chile Verde Burrito – Spicy but incredibly tasty.
Chile Rellano/Enchelada combination (Absolutely outstanding)
The main entrees were amazing, the tortillas fresh, the beans creamy and the mexican rice was absolutely on point.
Authenticity and care were obviously put into every dish.
It was our first visit, but definitely won’t be the last – thank you to all the staff for making our dinner incredible.

The food here was delicious. I did not know what to expect when I walked in. Instead I was greeted by a very nice and friendly server. The chips and salsa was really, really good. I could have had just that as a meal. The molcajete was delicious and very well served, lots of meat and a steaming delicious salsa to go with it. All ingredients within were delicious. I had the 7 mares. While not the biggest portion I’ve had it was just average in size but not average in flavor. It was steaming hot served in a metal bowl that retains the heat well. The soup was delicious and a nice moderate mix of seafood is inside it.

The food is fantastic! Service even better! We had a young girl take our order and serve she set us up with smiles and conversation, very very pleasant. Area is a bit scary but we’ll worth going. I’m definitely going back. They served us like kings and queens.!!

Okay…I am happy to say this one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Santa Ana. I have been here many times because I enjoy the authentic Mexican flavors in their dishes. I finally was able to bring one of my best friends here to try Camarones a la Diabla, which basically translates to spicy shrimp. Los Portales gives generous portions that will definitely satisfy your hunger. On top of delicious food, the service is top notch. The employees will explain to you what the dish contains to ensure your happy with your selection. They also offer catering services. I plan on trying the Mexican catering for an upcoming event. If you love authentic Mexican food, you gotta come here.
