Los Altos is a family-owned Mexican restaurant rooted in tradition, authenticity, and a deep love for the flavors of Jalisco, Mexico. The Real Deal in Mexicantown

If you’re exploring Southwest Detroit and want a truly authentic meal, you have to check out Los Altos. It’s not one of the huge, flashy places on the main drag; it feels more like you’re stepping into a family-run spot in Mexico, and the food is absolutely incredible. The vibe is super welcoming and colorful, with vibrant decor that makes the whole place feel lively and fun.

We came with a group, so we decided to go for the Botana Platter, and it was the best decision. It’s this massive platter loaded with fresh tortilla chips, beans, chorizo, perfectly grilled chicken and steak, and topped with gooey, melted cheese, avocado, and jalapeños. It’s basically the ultimate appetizer platter and could easily be a meal on its own. Everything on it was fresh and packed with flavor.

For my main, I had to try the puffy tacos. They were amazing – the shells were light and crispy but still a little chewy, and they were stuffed with seasoned ground beef and all the fixings. It’s so different from a standard hard or soft taco. The service was warm and friendly, making us feel right at home.

For a genuine taste of Mexican food in Detroit, Los Altos is a must-visit. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to come back to again and again. Don’t forget to grab some of their house-made salsa!

DISASTER! I went last night for Valentine’s Day because we didn’t have reservations anywhere else and they stayed open the latest. The food was horrible. The presentation you see if how they brought it to me. I saw fries on top of beans when the meal came with rice. Instead of telling me they didn’t have rice, they substituted with fries that were cold. Only thing hot on the plate was the skirt steak. It was unseasoned. The waitress was rude and as I’m trying to talk to her she walks away while I’m taking. I’ll never return here. I left the food right there. Disappointed

The service was very unprofessional; we came here to pay for our meal, not to eat for free. Because of the unpleasant atmosphere, the food wasn’t good either.

From someone who frequents SW often, and used to boast about this place, it was absolutely the worst service I ever received after visiting again. I don’t like leaving reviews, as I’m grateful I can even eat out, but it was awful and blatantly rude treatment from the moment we walked in. I remained kind to the server that rolled her eyes the moment we sat down. She pressured us to order as quickly as possible, stood over me while I was picking from the menu. Then wouldn’t bring me a fork to eat when all I received was a giant serving spoon. I was still kind to her the entire time, but she acted like I murdered her family member. It was so disheartening. The food was cold, and she checked on everyone in our section but us. I asked for more salsa three times, only not to receive it. I don’t understand how people can act this way, especially when you’re kind to them. Our order was very simple too.

This place is pretty good. Not great, but not bad. I’ve been here a few times. Fajitas are pretty good. Tacos can be a bit grisly. The prices are competitive. They’re working on getting a liquor license. They’re now open later also.

Los Altos has great food, great service and decent drinks. I would give it 4.5 stars because of these reasons. You won’t be disappointed and will be happy with the amount of time it takes to get a hot meal. I’ve being going here for years and they’ve always been consistent.

Los Altos makes Mexican food well. They have some good stuff

Food:

Birria / Goat and Pollo / Chicken Taco’s: Best food in the order. I liked that the Pollo had an herb-lemon flavor. Birria’s juicy as you eat. I always liked lamb, & goat became something I like more.
Los Altos gave corn tortillas in separate aluminum foil. It kept the tortillas dry. They did that so nicely. Also, the cilantro . . . So good! I appreciated the setup in the container.

Arroz / Rice is awesome. It’s nice with the dinner/lunch & on its own. One thing I found is the sauces. Both are spicy. A cooler sauce with the hottest sauce might’ve helped me.

Packaging & Service: ️
For DoorDash, everything arrived. Included everything & arrived hot.

Really, I take 1 star, because the beans weren’t as expected in both the Birria & Pollo dinner sets. I found the bean side flavorless + not filled with bacon, which isn’t usually the case with past experiences in other Taqueria places.

Other stuff: It would be cool to see shredded chicken over the crumbled chicken. Might also when getting tacos for myself; start requesting no side of vegetable stuff.

Overall: Liked Los Altos. The DoorDash meals were authentic, with nice, filling main dishes + fine sides. I’d get it again.

Server was rude, ignored several of our requests, lengua was cold and honestly the worst quality I’ve ever had. We asked for more salsa several times and never received it. The strangest part was when ordering drinks, the server stood over us while holding the menu making us feel pressured to make a decision quickly. God this place sucks.
