LOignon Strasbourg – Authentic French Dining with Exceptional …
Reviews
The value is decent at around €30, and the staff are friendly enough, but the place is incredibly stuffy- even in September. It felt cramped and lacked any proper breeze, making it a bit uncomfortable. It’s a perfectly serviceable bistro if you’re stuck, but it certainly doesn’t live up to the high rating online.
Overall, a middle-of-the-road meal that’s okay for the price, but don’t expect a culinary masterpiece.
The onion soup was pleasantly light and refreshing, while the escargot was richly seasoned and flavorful, making it an excellent appetizer.
For the main courses, the duck breast was sliced a bit too thin and cooked slightly more than expected, which was a little disappointing. The braised chicken, on the other hand, had a mild and comforting flavor.
For dessert, the tartness of the pear balanced beautifully with the sweetness of the caramel, creating a delightful and well-rounded ending to the meal.
We began with the onion soup, which was absolutely divine—rich, deeply flavourful, and wonderfully balanced. The escargot was another pleasant surprise: nicely chewy and not at all dry, unlike versions we’ve had elsewhere.
For the mains, I went for the tiger steak. While the flavour was good, a few pieces were unfortunately quite chewy and difficult to swallow. My mum ordered the pikeperch, which was the real standout—perfectly cooked with a decadent citrus note running through it.
All in all, L’Oignon offers a memorable meal with excellent starters and well-considered flavours. With a reservation sorted, it’s well worth adding to your plans when visiting Strasbourg.
This is the kind of cuisine you savor over good company and wine (which they have a great selection of), and you are guaranteed to have the best time.
Staffs are warm and attentive, the vibes are cozy, couldn’t asked for a better dining experience. Would really recommend anyone visiting Strasbourg to make a reservation here. I know I would always come back here whenever I’m in town.
The only drawback is the space itself. It’s a bit cramped, and at peak hours you definitely feel the squeeze. But the quality of the food more than compensates, and once the plates start arriving, the room fades into the background. Overall, a remarkable culinary experience with Michelin‑caliber cooking, excellent wine, and a slightly tight layout that’s easy to forgive once you start eating. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and efficient, with smooth, unobtrusive service that keeps everything running effortlessly.
The onion soup was not terrible, but it lacked balance. There was too much bread and cheese, which completely overpowered the onion flavour. The depth of flavour was missing.
The risotto was technically well cooked (the rice was properly cooked and nicely bound), but it lacked flavour. In my opinion, it needed a different or stronger cheese to give it more character.
The biggest disappointment was the beef fillet. It was almost completely unseasoned, very chewy, and poorly cooked. I could not finish it. For a €36 dish, this is unacceptable. It felt either cooked at excessively high heat or simply mishandled. A beef fillet should never be this tough. The fries and pommes sautées served as sides were also bland, unsalted, and not crispy at all.
We decided not to try their desserts as we were already disappointed by the food and did not feel it was worth it.
The ambiance is cosy and the staff were friendly, but nothing exceptional. We paid €105.50 for two beef fillets, one risotto (ordered as a side), one onion soup, one beer, and one glass of wine which is far too expensive for the quality received.
I would not return and would not recommend this restaurant based on my experience. Perhaps other dishes are better, but I can only comment on what we tried. If the beef fillet continues to be served this way, it should be removed from the menu or cooked properly before charging such a high price!!
