The service was excellent!
The food was okay. I ordered the teriyaki beef and spam musubi. The musubi has gotten half the size, unless they made it smaller as it was free with purchase.
The teriyaki beef was thicker and not tasty at all. I asked the employee/manager (not sure if he was the manager, but I think he said he didn’t work up front often as I was asking questions).
He said the beef was thin cut, it wasn’t.
At least when I am in town and staying at the hotel next door, I won’t be returning to this location.
The cabbage was simple, boiled but not to death, and I put a packet of the Sriracha sauce on one side of a rice scoop and a packet of soy on the other half. I left the other rice scoop plain in case I wanted a palate cleanser. This macaroni salad is wrong. It is a ghost. How can it be so bland? Adding anything would be an improvement. Relish. Kim chi. Mango chutney. Literally ANYTHING. Those are accents; the pork is the reason we are here. 100% smoked perfection.
The Dragon musubi was a fun treat. I think they are using low-sodium Spam, which I prefer, and their preparation was ideally balanced. The special BBQ sauce was a Polynesian style blast from the past, thick and sweet and smoky.
Hubby had the Loco Moco, which is basically Hawaiian huevos rancheros. 2 hamburger patties smothered in beef gravy over rice. The stars, 2 over-medium eggs on top, arrived perfectly runny. He said (between bites) it would be a winning hangover remedy.
I am thrilled to have true Hawaiian BBQ here and will definitely be back for more!
To be honest, I’ve never been partial to their thick mac salad with the little flecks of tuna in it. Curry had a weird bitterness and the patties and gravy on my loco moco could have been better-seasoned as well.
Overall not bad, just could be better. Prices are a bit crazy, too, but you do get a lot of food. Regardless, after moving here from Las Vegas where there is a Hawaiian BBQ restaurant on nearly every corner, I am incredibly grateful to finally have one here in Charleston to scratch that itch periodically. Staff is very friendly as well!
