Little Tokyo St Joseph: A Hidden Gem for Sushi Lovers in St Joseph …
Reviews
Service: 4/5 (helpful and kind staff)
Atmosphere: 1/5 ( take out only. You can’t get past the front door.)
I’m grateful for my experience at Little Tokyo. I’ve been looking for fresh sushi and ran across this spot in Saint Joseph, MI. The staff are friendly and help with the menu. Unfortunately, this restaurant appears to not have recovered since the covid pandemic. Little Tokyo is cash or checks only, and there’s no dine in. The food was mediocre. I ordered the salmon skin roll, spicy tuna roll, and spicy salmon roll. The spicy tuna had a lot of fillers instead of being all meat, and the quality wasn’t great. However, I enjoyed my experience and the service made up for other areas. All in all, Little Tokyo was okay.
✔ Sushi rolls that were raw (not deep-fried or cooked) were old, cold, and hard.
✔ Service was extremely slow
✔ Soups and salads were good
✔ BYOB! Want alcohol with your dinner? You’ll need to bring you’re own. They don’t have a liquor license
✔ Get ready to pay in cash, credit cards won’t work here.
If I could give zero stars, I would. I’ve grown up on sushi for 23 years. I know the difference between fresh fish and week old fish. The texture, the taste, all of it is very different. And this fish is old. I mean at least week old fish that’s been refrigerated. I chose the Dragon roll and salmon skin hand roll. There was very little actual eel in the roll (especially for the price) . They stuffed the entire roll with cucumber and rice, the avocado on top was hard and yellow. The eel was old, musty, and cold! I’ve ordered this roll for years from “Sakura’s 2” in portage, the roll is warm and tender. Compare their roll with this one and you’ll always taste the difference between fresh fish and week old fish. The salmon skin roll was hard, the salmon skin was actually green, and it tasted and felt as if they just dethawed it from the freezer. If the only sushi you’ve ever had is Meijer’s half price sushi, Martin’s sushi, or this. Then you won’t know the difference between truly fresh, tender, melt in your mouth sashimi and week old fish that’s just been dethawed. My family ordered a couple different rolls with salmon, the salmon looked like ground beef. On top of that, the service was extremely slow. The menu looks thrown together and out of order. The only saving grace was the miso soup, seaweed salad, and Tako (Octopus) salad. A majority of the positive reviews I’ve read are from their deepfried/ cooked rolls. So maybe those are okay and maybe their other items that aren’t sushi or sashimi are okay. However, I’ll never order any raw fish from here again.
She ordered some dragon roll with shrimp tempura and crunch. The shrimp tempura tasted old and crunch was stale. The roll was cut jaggedly and in hunks rather than sushi slices. We didn’t even eat it after having a bite. I went to open the fortune cookies and those were stale too.
