Little Mermaid Café was such a wonderful find! We were on our way to Lutsen and decided to stop for breakfast after googling the best breakfast restaurants in the area — and I’m so glad we did! From the moment we walked in, the place felt so warm and welcoming. The mermaid theme was adorable, and my 9-year-old absolutely loved it.
The food was incredible — honestly the best breakfast I’ve ever had! Everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The omelettes were fluffy and delicious, the pancakes were soft and buttery, and the French toast was simply mouth-watering. The prices were very affordable, especially for the quality and portion sizes.
The staff was super friendly and attentive, making our experience even better. The café itself is clean, cozy, and has a really nice vibe — you can tell they care about their customers.
I’m so happy we found this place by chance, and I’ll definitely be coming back whenever we’re in the area. Highly recommend Little Mermaid Café to anyone looking for a great breakfast spot!

Very nice place. Great food! Simple diner food. Making this one of my go-to places to eat. Service a little slow but I think their young and learning so please be patient & kind.

I stopped here for a quick bite to eat while on the road. I wish I had more time. This is definitely more of a place you should go if you can sit, chat, and explore. It’s in a museum where they’ve put a lot of effort into preserving the local history. The Little Mermaid theme is fun and the food has an accessible price point. Come here for friendly small town vibes. The hash browns are crispy and the cranberry wild rice toast is nice.
The Little Mermaid theme is prevalent in the decor and if you have a kid, for example, who really loves mermaids, they’ll probably love posing with the statues.

We stopped by there because it was time for lunch and we just wanted to try a restaurant away from I-35. We are so glad we did. It’s located in a small Danish town of Askov, thus the name Little Mermaid, a Danish fairy tale, and the cafe is used to be the cafeteria of town’s school which was closed in 2004. We feel we learned so much in the one hour we were there. The food was good and the people were so friendly and wonderful. We want to come back to visit their history museum right next door to the cafe next time.

The staff is super friendly and kind and they are very generous with the coffee. We will definitely be back to eat when we are in the area. Love the haystack breakfast!

The Little Mermaid, so named because it resides in the former Hans Christen (HC) Andersen School, is super quaint. You enter the school doors and proceed into the old cafeteria, bedecked with historic photos of nearby towns, and memorabilia from the Pine County Historical Society. Take a tour of the memorabilia when you head to the restrooms!
We ate the German Burger (sauerkraut and “Swiss”) and the patty melt. Fries or sweet potato fries are extra and are tasty. The burger was definitely hand pressed and tasted great.
The staff are very welcoming and kind. A fun experience all around.

Little Mermaid Cafe in Askov is located in a former elementary school cafeteria. Odd and interesting. The food was good. The server was friendly. After eating I spent an hour walking through the school which has been turned into a museum. There was also an antique store in one of the school rooms. It’s a nice place to check out.

This restraunt is run by the Pine County Historical Society. When you walk into the old school, it is straightforward. The Society turned the old cafeteria into the restraunt. They did some decorating to transform the space into the restraunt. They are open for breakfast and lunch. We had lunch and were very happy with our food.
It’s nice to see a building like this converted into useful space. It goes against our tear it down society.
I also wrote a post for the museum and gift shop.
Please check it out. It is definitely worth the stop.
