Long version: For some reason they crammed a party of five into a tight booth that would barely fit four, despite having plenty of seats with more space available. The guy waiting on us was having some issues remembering what to do with us; he skipped over people while asking for drink orders, kept getting confused over who ordered what, narrowly remembered to bring the complimentary bread as though it were an afterthought, among other things. The server claimed the soups were an appetizer when they were charged as an entree on the bill, and he apparently cannot count, because we were charged a 20% gratuity for a sixth person that wasn’t even there, and didn’t even notice the missing set of silverware. The food itself was meh. The complimentary bread is flavorless and kinda stodgy. The fetuccine alfredo was decent enough, but it’s an $8 upcharge to add chicken to what is, in practice, just white sauce and pasta for roughly $20 alone. The salmon and capers entree was downright insulting; for $32 they give you a palm sized puck of fish, a few small shrimp, and a fist and a half wad of near-dry spaghetti to make it seem like they tried. Sure, the food didn’t kill me or any of my entourage, but we did not get a $200 experience here, despite being charged about that much in total.
Save yourself the trouble and go to Genovese’s. You’ll get far better food and service for a much smaller bill.
It’s a word thrown around far too casually these days — by restaurants, brands, and people alike — yet so rarely lived.
But at Little Italy’s Ristorante in Daytona Beach, and in its owner Chef Mario, authenticity isn’t a marketing angle. It’s simply the way things are.
Something about the place felt real from the outside. So after a long, full day, my wife, our youngest son, and I walked in around 9:40pm — just 20 minutes before closing — and were greeted not with impatience, but with open arms. Genuine hospitality.
Now, understand the stakes: my son is dead serious about his pizza, my wife is a full-blown lasagna snob, and for me it’s chicken marsala, all the way. That’s what we ordered.
About 25 years ago, in my mid-twenties, I traveled through Italy — Venice, Murano, Florence, Rome — and tasted real Italian food the way it’s meant to be eaten. Nothing I’ve had in America has ever come close… until now.
The Margherita pizza was perfection: gloriously thin, soft yet firm, with just the right crunch and chew. The fresh mozzarella, basil, and sauce — calling it “sauce” feels wrong. It’s closer to what your soul hears and your taste buds imagine when a real Italian son talks about his mother’s “tomato gravy.” It took me straight back to Italy.
The lasagna was beautifully layered with homemade ricotta, the perfect amount of meatball, and that same sauce. No excess cheese. No heavy-handed meat. No grease. Just balance, restraint, and craft. Seeing the bliss on my wife’s face — eyes closed, savoring — said everything.
And the chicken marsala? Unlike any I’ve had. The chicken was so tender I could cut it with a spoon. Served over perfectly portioned angel hair, the marsala sauce — with sautéed onions, mushrooms, and a “punch of garlic,” as Chef Mario described it — delivered bold yet subtle flavor that never overpowered a bite.
It became immediately obvious: only the freshest, real, whole ingredients and traditional cooking methods are used here. Chef Mario cooks with tallow and prepares food the same way he does for his own family at home — with care and intention. No shortcuts. No compromises.
As incredible as the food was, the experience elevated it even more. Mid-meal, Chef Mario stopped by our table — not as a formality, but simply as himself. He felt less like a host making the rounds and more like a welcome guest at our table. As if we were sitting together in his mother’s kitchen, sharing food, stories, and tradition the way families have for generations.
The way he pronounced words like ricotta, mozzarella, margherita, lasagna, and calzone transported us straight to old-world Italy. It felt like eating in a place that had existed for a hundred years, not a five-year-old restaurant in Daytona Beach.
Our son kept saying, “This isn’t just my favorite Italian restaurant — it’s my favorite restaurant. Period.” His mother and I agree.
Simply the best. We’ll be customers for life.
If you’re looking for truly authentic Italian food and truly authentic people, do not miss this.
But if you’re looking for uptight, white-tablecloth pretension, this isn’t your place — and that’s exactly what makes it so special. It’s honest food, honest people, and honest conversation. Everything and everyone here is real — as authentic as the food itself — which is exactly the way we like it. And if that’s your kind of place, you’ll feel right at home like we do.
I had been telling everyone about their Eggplant Parmesan from their Beach Street location, but it wasn’t on the limited soft-opening menu. Mario stopped by our table to thank us for coming in, and when I mentioned it, he went out of his way to have the chef prepare it for me. That kind of hospitality really stands out.
The Eggplant Parmesan was outstanding, and my husband ordered the Veal Parmesan, which was perfect.
Great authentic Italian food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Thank you Mario for taking the time to talk with us and for your dedication to your customers. We will definitely be back. Little Italy is becoming our go-to Italian restaurant in Ormond Beach!
The food was beyond incredible. Every bite felt like home, like sitting at my Nonna’s table and eating a meal made with love, tradition, and soul. The flavors were authentic, comforting, and perfectly balanced, real Italian food the way it’s meant to be.
This is not just a restaurant, it’s an experience filled with warmth, heart, and unforgettable flavors. We will definitely be coming back, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for true Italian cuisine and genuine hospitality. ❤️
