Social Profile:

The original Little India was opened in Dunedin in 1991 and we have been operating in Dunedin ever since. We are located in the central city just one block away from the Octagon. We have a large dining area that is sectioned off, so if you are looking for an intimate dinner for two or a large group we can cater for both. Subhash and the team look forward to hosting you to at the home of Little India, where our story began.

I ordered the Chicken Pulao from Little India and what I received was nowhere close to what was advertised. Instead of a proper pulao cooked together with chicken and vegetables, I got a box of plain jeera rice that looked and tasted like it had just been microwaved, with a few pieces of pink, boiled chicken and large, half‑raw chunks of onion thrown in. For a dish that costs around $16–18, this felt like paying for pulao and getting leftover fried rice.
This is not a minor mistake, it feels like outright misrepresentation of the dish. If you put “Chicken Pulao” on the menu and charge restaurant prices for it, the basic expectation is that the rice, chicken, and vegetables are cooked together with proper spices and flavour. What I received is something I would never call pulao, and I doubt anyone who cares about Indian food would either.
What makes it worse is that Little India is using the name “India” and supposedly representing Indian cuisine. Serving something like this under the label of Chicken Pulao is honestly disheartening. It’s not just about one bad meal; it’s about respect for the food, the customers, and the culture you are claiming to represent. Is it really that hard to be true to the dish you are selling and provide the quality you’re charging for?
I rarely write negative reviews, but this experience left me feeling cheated and disappointed. I hope the restaurant takes this seriously, revisits how this dish is prepared, and starts serving something that actually deserves to be called Chicken Pulao.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t add the video!

Great food, got chicken tikka masala and it was the best Indian dish I’ve ever had. Great service, the waitress was very friendly and informative when asking questions about the menu, and the atmosphere was amazing. Great authentic music and decor. A bit more expensive than other places but worth it for a perfect experience.

Dear Subhash,

Thank you for the wonderful experience at Little India Dunedin. It was a great opportunity to celebrate our wedding anniversary and 60th birthday at your restaurant.

We were thrilled with the taste, quantity, and quality of the food, all of which was complemented by excellent service. Our guests were truly amazed by their experience.

Thank you for your hospitality in making our event such a memorable part of our lives.

Best regards,

Arick and Sunanda John

Quiet early evening but great service and it was also a BYO although they also sell alcohol so was able to pick up a nice bottle of vino from a liquor store. Food was great and we had starters and main course with rice and nan bread. All was great would recommend. Visiting NZ from UK

We came into the restaurant around 8:30 pm on Monday out of the rain. The folks working were so kind to us. We cannot get over how sweet our server was. We ordered the popular appetizer (I can’t remember what it was called unfortunately) that was so good. We also got the butter chicken for the entree – definitely would recommend! It was well worth the stop!

A Hidden Gem in Dunedin!

We dropped into Little India Dunedin by chance — and what a discovery! As someone who dines on Indian cuisine regularly, I can honestly say this was one of the best meals I’ve had anywhere.

The service was first-class — warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming — and the food was simply superb. Every dish was bursting with authentic flavour, beautifully presented, and perfectly balanced.

This restaurant will now be one of my definite stops whenever I visit Dunedin again. I cannot praise Little India highly enough — an absolute standout for anyone who loves truly great Indian food!

Best regards to all the staff, Gary, Adelaide SA

I came in with my mates after a long day. Hands down the best Indian restaurant in Dunedin. Really high quality food, fantastic service-extremely nice staff. Easy 5 out of 5.
I’m not even trying to be exaggerated, but one of the best (if not the best) curry I have ever had. Chur

When you order a dish that happens to be the same as another person in your party and the only difference is one is mild and the other hot curry you don’t serve mild to both parties. Lazy really and it ruins the experience. Fool me once only and yes I paid for the whole party
