Family Owned Peruvian Restaurant Executive chef, Martín Castillo, and his brothers, Antonio and Eduardo, grew up around a busy kitchen. Their mother, Luz, was well known in her neighborhood for her delicious cooking: her son’s friends would always ask her to make their families a dish on special occasions. By the 1990’s the Castillo brothers had left Perú and found themselves in the U.S. They continued their ritual of cooking home-style Peruvian dishes out of their apartment for family, friends and, soon enough, friends of friends. It was then that they knew there was something worth sharing. By 2002, the Castillo’s first restaurant, “Limón” opened its doors on 17th Street in the Mission District of San Francisco.

It is on the expensive side—expect to pay $60+ for a takeout order for two—so it’s more of a bi-monthly treat for us than a weekly staple. However, the quality is always top-notch!
The atmosphere is fun with warmth and cozyness.
Service is great, food comes out fast and the servers are always making sure you’re enjoying your dinner. Kudos to them!
The food is too salty for my taste. I love the presentation of it but not necessarily the taste.
My friend received his food first, and the serving mine probably 30 minutes after. I almost asked them to cancel my order so we can leave.
The tables are arranged too closely together and everyone can hear everyone’s conversation. I personally do not like it.
Good vibes here to hang out.
Appetizer: CEVICHE LIMÓN
Mains: Arroz Con Mariscos Paella. Half chicken and we got all the sauce options and fries as a side. The classic lomo saltado.
Friendly staff. Good service, not too busy. We sat upstairs.
The Seco is now bone-in short rib made made medium rare and mouth watering tender. There is a new pep and attentiveness to the service; which I appreciate. The music has changed to more trendy secular music; which is a must in this day and age. Overall the presentation of all of the dishes seems to have been up leveled.
Dishes start at around $14, but it is now a place that I’m happy to pay $30+ for a dish at.
This place has 3 of my favorite dishes in the city. With my new favorite being a recent addition. The fish of the day. The drinks are always fantastic and the service is top notch. It’s lovely enough to be a dinner date spot and casual enough to be a quick launch haunt. I’m a huge fun and I’m sure you will be also.
I am writing this review based on a disappointing experience around Christmas Eve.
On December 23, I called the restaurant to ask what time they would be closing the following night. I was told they would close at 10:00 PM. I then asked if I could reserve a chicken, because Christmas Eve is a very special day for me and, culturally, it is an important celebration for everyone. I specifically asked if they were 100% sure they would have chicken available, and I was assured multiple times that they would. They assure me that they will open until 10 pm, they 100% guaranteed
On December 24 at 7:45 PM, I placed an Uber Eats order. The app showed that the restaurant was preparing the order, and the driver even arrived at the location. Suddenly, the order was canceled. When I called the restaurant, I was told they were closing early and that the owner had decided last minute to close for the night.
I understand that unexpected things can happen, including weather or emergencies, and I truly appreciate that the person I spoke to on the phone was apologetic. However, this was a special day, and because I had called the day before to confirm, I trusted the information I was given. Had I known they might close early, I would have chosen a different restaurant. Unfortunately, by the time this happened, it was too late to make other plans.
I’m sure the food would have been good, but this situation shows poor planning and communication from the owner. It’s disappointing, especially after taking the extra step to confirm in advance. While I will still enjoy the holiday with my family, this experience left me let down and hesitant to rely on this restaurant again for important occasions.
