By the time I started working at Mount Clemens Public Library the calendar for the Winter months was due. I didn’t have much time to really consider what programs I wanted to lead. The Interim Director was very clear though. There had to be a Black History program.
Last year, there had not been one. She was adamant that we not repeat that again. Black History programs began to be added to the calendar along with the one I would manage, Taste of Soul‼️‼️‼️
The thought behind the program was that it would allow patrons to taste soul food while being provided with the historical context behind each bite. I could have required people to register, but I wanted to leave it open. I decided to leave it as a drop-in program.
The food was catered by Lillie Bell’s of Redford and when I say that they came through. They came through. Chanae and her brother, Davon, delivered tasty dishes and hospitality that made this program a very big hit.
I am still processing the success of the event largely because I never saw it as a black program. My vision for the program was an opportunity for the community to come and partake in dishes that span decades. Dishes my great-great grandparents made that were later passed down to the matriarchs in my family.
I know the power of a home cooked meal—of soul food. I’ve seen how a meal can bring people together of all age groups for laughter and conversation creating a shared harmony over a good meal. Up until Friday, I mostly witnessed this with my family.
Friday, however, I witnessed this at the library. I witnessed young adults sitting amongst the elders, and I witnessed a community of diverse people from different backgrounds sit down and break bread. And it was so beautiful and so humbling.
Then if it couldn’t get any better than that, Chanae explained the history of Lillie Bell’s, its namesake, and the dishes that were passed down to her…
…and I am still processing it.
I’ve done many library programs, but this one—this one. Just hit different. We even had a Taste of Soul playlist which patrons thoroughly enjoyed.
Thanks again to Lillie Bell’s for coming through and to the Mount Clemens Public Library for making the event possible.

The strawberry banana pudding was mostly cookie, the strawberries still had stems on some pieces, and they weren’t sweet. The grape Kool-Aid tasted like flavored water, and I haven’t had Kool-Aid in over a decade—but I got it for the experience. Sadly, it wasn’t enjoyable at all. I still have half the food and barely touched the drink.
The ordering process was also uncomfortable. After placing my order online, I received a text saying I had to present my ID and the card used for purchase when picking up. If I had known that before paying, I would not have ordered. Some of us take our data privacy seriously. There was no explanation of why this was required, how my information would be used, or who has access to it. That alone made me uneasy.
Customer service didn’t help the experience. When I walked in, three employees were talking amongst themselves. No one greeted or acknowledged me until I overheard my name and said, “That’s me.” I was patient, but it felt unprofessional and dismissive.
I really wanted to enjoy this place and support the business, but my first experience was not good at all. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, but the food, service, and overall experience didn’t reflect the price or the “no refunds” policy. I left disappointed and won’t be returning.
This was around 3.50P & they ran out of cornbread (how??? in a soul food place) & no chicken quarters. There was only chicken wings available (they don’t serve separate parts of the chicken). So, one of us ordered & I we shared.
The order was chicken wings, mac & cheese & sweet potatoes.
The chicken wings were small (6 or so), but good. The meat fell off the bone and hot. The seasoning was just right (as I told the employee). The sweet potatoes were good, as I could taste the sweet potato . But, luke warm. The mac & cheese was hot, however, the other party stated some of it was clumpy and hard. As far as the side dishes, the cups are small.
For the price of one meal & running out of items, so early in the day, we’ll have to pass on future visits.
Don’t know how an order can be wrong when it was slow today. Yams and macaroni do not look the same. I luckily opened the container before I left out to notice the wrong side given. I hope the young person who took the yams that I opened actually tossed that out. I didn’t see her do it when I was standing there today and the macaroni was given to me.
Highlights: Cashier was amazing, pleasant, professional, and helpful! Greens are really good and have been consistent across my orders.
