Light Cantine is by far the most authentic Sichuan restaurant in the Metro Detroit area. Ever since traveling through parts of Asia, I’ve had a deep craving for true Sichuan cuisine and that signature mala flavor—and I finally found it here. The food is spicy, bold, and packed with flavor.
While the service isn’t quite on the same level as the food, it’s still good overall. I might have expected a bit more of the traditional Asian hospitality, but that’s a small detail compared to how incredible the dishes are.
My favorites so far are the Chengdu Stir-Fried Beef, Stir-Fried Cabbage with Chilis, and the Dry Pot Shrimp. I always ask for them extra spicy—it’s worth it.
Overall, Light Cantine has become my favorite ethnic restaurant in the area, and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone who loves authentic Sichuan flavors.
Edit: The service here has become very slow. The food at this restaurant isn’t cheap—you can easily expect to pay $50–$100 per person—and with that price point, you naturally expect attentive service. Instead, the staff often disappears. They don’t bring the check to the table, they rarely come around to refill water, and on multiple occasions I’ve had to get up just to place an order because they prefer staying behind the cash register.
I still go because the food is genuinely delicious, but the service has been getting on my nerves lately. I really hope the owner sees this and makes some improvements.

Came here with my family to celebrate a birthday, and we had a wonderful time. We brought our own seafood and had it cooked here, and the processing service was excellent, everything was prepared perfectly and tasted amazing. The atmosphere was great, and the staff were very thoughtful and attentive. A truly happy and memorable birthday. 10/10 experience, highly recommend!

The place was pretty empty both times I went. The first time, the server was nice and knowledgeable but the second I went there was a different server and she was unfriendly and didn’t really know anything. I guess you just have to get lucky lol. The place was cute and had lots of decorations but it looked a bit unkempt. The food was decent overall, but the rice was really mushy and tasted really cheap…the boba was really good though. They probably hawe better dessert dishes than their normal entrees. Speaking of entrees, they have a Cantonese chef and a Sichuan chef and it seems like they’re not always nhere at the same time since the menu is split into Cantonese dishes and Sichuan dishes and the Sichuan chef wasn’t there on my first visit and the Cantonese chef wasn’t there on my second visit

Our group of 12 had a wonderful lunch at Light Cantine last week. They have a huge menu with both Cantonese and Szechuan dishes (among others), and that can sometimes be a warning sign that the food would not be authentic. Turns out they have a Cantonese chef and a Szechuan chef. Both are there on the weekends but take turns during the week (call ahead to double check the schedule). We ordered 9 dishes to share family style, and every single dish was delicious. Each person had their favorite, but the roasted duck (not pictured), pork belly with taro, fish with pickled mustard green, and sauté intestine were some of my favorites. The service by Stephanie was wonderful and efficient, and the bill came out to be less than $20 pp before tip. Highly recommended!

Mixed bag here. One time we went and had some great chicken and good fried rice, authentic with solid service. Another time, they had only a single new part time employee working, and it was terrible all around. Hopefully that was the exception because the first time I’d have recommended it stronger.

I have been searching for a katsu Curry spot in the area for quite a while.
Great taste and big portions . Definitely, we’ll be back to try out their other items . The menu looks pretty good with some less common dishes which is great if you’d like to try new things

The food was so good, I had to take a photo so excuse the mid-meal photo. We ordered cumin beef, mahpoa tofu, and dry spicy shrimp. Food was fresh and spicy. We also got passionfruit lemon tea and mango pomelo sago. Delicious! We would definitely come back again.

This is our first time to dine in this restaurant and the food and dessert is higher than our expectations. Both Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine are really good and authentic. The service is also satisfied! Highly recommended!

Honestly, Light Cantine is my new go-to spot in Madison Heights. The food here hits the spot every time. The mouthwatering chicken was super tender with that perfect chili oil kick, and the Mao Xue Wang came out bubbling hot with so many goodies inside. I also tried the spicy stir-fried pork kidney (never had it before) and it was surprisingly delicious — full of wok flavor.
Oh, and don’t skip the roast duck — crispy skin, juicy meat, so good with rice. Everything just feels authentic and packed with flavor. Service was friendly, and portions are generous too. Highly recommend if you love Sichuan & Cantonese food!
