Social Profile:

License No. 1 offers a unique experience, like no other. This underground speakeasy-style cocktail lounge is a tribute to the elegant charm of the early 20th century. Step back in time with classic, handcrafted libations, chef-prepared small plates, and a lively atmosphere when you enter this hidden gem in the heart of downtown Boulder. When Hotel Boulderado opened its doors in 1909, the City of Boulder was dry having outlawed the sale of demon rum and spirits within city limits in 1907. In 1969, one of the first legal licenses to serve hard liquor in a restaurant was issued to the bar located in the basement of Hotel Boulderado. Today License No. 1 continues with the very same liquor license first issued in 1969. We are proud to continue

Speakeasy-style bar serving classic cocktails in chill, retro-inspired digs inside Hotel Boulderado.

This was a very cool experience for a friends birthday get together. They did not have any chartreuse which I was very disappointed about. But the drinks were still relatively unique with good options. The food was not amazing to be honest, calamari was a bit saltier than I’d like but was gluten free which is somewhat rare. The burger itself tasted pretty good but the gluten free bun which is tough to get right was quickly falling apart. I love the setup of the rooms and we had a great time playing pool – you do need some cash for change to make quarters – it’s 4 quarters for each pool game.

Speakeasy vibes for sure! It’s like stepping back in time, located in the basement of the Boulderado hotel. They have everyday drink offerings as well as fancy cocktails. This place is a maze of rooms that I’m assuming we’re used to hide illegal activities during the prohibition times. They have pool table, darts and skeeball, as well as a live entertainment area. The staff was super nice.

I’ve come here multiple times and the drinks have never been disappointing. Very high quality drinks, reasonable prices and the bartenders are quite knowledgeable compared to other cocktail places.

Great Boulder bar. Weekend comedy by Comic Cents is worth the trip. Small venue comedy with some great comedians.

Love the layout of this speakeasy, lots of alcoves with comfy seating. Great atmosphere and drinks. Also highly recommend checking out one of their comedy shows.

One of my favorite bars. Great drinks and the space is super cozy. Lots of little nooks and crannies to get lost in. Used to be a place called the catacombs which was a fitting name. I recently went to a comedy show with friends and it was just ok. I felt for the price of the show it was lacking. I’ve been to see a couple shows in Denver with bigger comedians for the same price. I felt I had to fake laugh at some do the material. The main person was ok though. I had never had food here before and ordered the calamari which was pretty good. Couldn’t tell if they made it fresh or not but I did like it. Definitely will be back for drinks.

Unfortunately a great bar gets one star from a bad experience with Sean the security guard. My friend is visiting and just got in, extremely jet-lagged we walked from my place. We had one drink here and Sean kicked us out. Definitely puts a sour taste in our mouth.
