Leona General Store – Best Back Roads Steakhouse in Texas!
Reviews
Wait is for good reason though. Menu is small, food is great, value is excellent for the quantity and quality. This is one of the best steakhouses in Texas.
We had 2 – 18 oz Steaks, 2 drinks and 2 desserts for $127 for a Valentines day dinner date. I’d say worth the money.
It is busy busy, and can get loud with everyone there having a good time and talking. Just a heads up!
Feels like an old country southern restaurant you’d go to after church, because it pretty much is! It’s about as Texan as it gets.
Just go!
Thank you Erica and staff
The Leona General Store feels like a slice of history. Eating in a building from 1921 with red-checkered tablecloths and six generations of family history on the walls makes the food taste even better.
The staff treats you like a neighbor, and the ‘no-menu’ style (just tell them how big you want your steak) keeps things simple.
It’s casual, cozy, and exactly what a Texas country tavern should be.
Pro tip: Save room for the blackberry cobbler or the banana pudding!
The doors open at 5:30 PM, but regulars start lining up by 4:45 PM.
There isn’t a traditional menu—you choose your meat (Ribeye, Smoked Chicken, or Grilled Pork Ribeye) and your steak size (starting at 10oz and going up in 2oz increments).
BYOB: You can bring their own beverages.
There are standard sides—typically a salad and their famous skin-on mashed potatoes.
Steak Night (Friday & Saturday)
For steak nights, the price depends entirely on the size of the cut you order.
Base Price: A 10 oz Hand-Cut Ribeye starts at $33.95.
Per Ounce: For every ounce over the initial 10 oz, the price increases by $1.75.
Each steak entrée includes a salad, homemade rolls, and their signature cheesy mashed potatoes.
Catfish Night (Thursday)
Thursday nights are dedicated to fried catfish with a much simpler price structure:
Full Plate (4 pieces): $15.99
Kids Plate (2 pieces): $10.99
Included Sides: Plates come with coleslaw, beans, French fries, and a hushpuppy.
If you aren’t in the mood for steak or fish, they offer other protein options during steak nights:
Boneless Grilled Chicken Breast: $18.95 (includes the same sides as the steak).
Grilled Pork Ribeye: Typically priced similarly to the chicken or the base steak.
Beverages are not included in the meal price, but it is BYOB, which can save you quite a bit on your total bill compared to a traditional steakhouse.
First time going and I can confidently say it’s the best steak I’ve ever had with juicy, tender, and fatty cute of ribeye at a surprisingly low price for the quality. It didn’t end there there though the dessert was one of the best I’ve had, we tried out their cobblers and a special dessert that was ice cream on top of a brownie and cobbler. Everything we had was nothing short of amazing.
Whats pictured below is the 10oz and 18oz ribeye.
We came for the famous ribeyes, but they also offered pork ribeyes and chicken. The standard ribeye was 10 oz (around $32), and you can add extra ounces for about $2 each if you’re extra hungry. The ribeye was flavorful and generous, and it came with unlimited salad, mashed potatoes, and bread. For dessert, we tried both the pecan cobbler and blackberry cobbler—both were warm, sweet, and absolutely hit the spot.
From the outside, the restaurant looks small, but once inside we were surprised by how spacious it actually was. Even though the line behind us stretched long, it moved quickly and the crowd thinned out much faster than expected.
Overall, it was a fun experience with hearty food, friendly atmosphere, and well worth the drive!
