Flavorful, delicious dishes! We very much enjoyed our dinner at Leitao. Everything had a delicious sauce. We loved the little neck clams, the peppers and the sirloin steak in garlic sauce. Portuguese bread was amazing. The piri piri chicken was good but the drumstick was a bit dry. Fries were fresh and crispy. Overall would recommend. Good, attentive service. Note they got rid of tipping and automatically charge 20%.

I had an order of clams and chorizo and an order of shrimp in lobster sauce. The clams were just ok. They could’ve used more seasoning. The shrimp in lobster sauce was great. The menu is really interesting and extensive. I have to go back to try more dishes. Service was fantastic. I love the cozy atmosphere here.

We were very grateful to get a table as a walk-in around 5pm without a reservation. The appetizers were much better than the main courses. The polvo was the best dish of the meal, the clams were extremely fresh, though the sausage was a bit salty. The Mediterranean white bread with olive oil was amazing; my mom even ordered an extra one.

For mains, we ordered the grilled chicken and the seafood rice, and both were quite underwhelming. The chicken lacked flavor and was mostly just covered in chili oil. Surprisingly, the seafood rice was less flavorful than the clam appetizer and also tasted bland.

We finished with a Portuguese egg tart, which we expected to be a specialty of a Portuguese restaurant, but it wasn’t really to our taste. It felt like flour was added to the custard, giving it a slightly sticky texture, and the flavor was just okay.

The service, however, was excellent! Special thanks to the gentleman who took great care of us.

On Christmas Eve, I went out for dinner at Restaurante Leitão in New York. We started with an octopus salad as an appetizer, served with an incredible little bread. For the main dishes, we had codfish and a francesinha — honestly, one of the best francesinhas I’ve ever had in my life, absolutely amazing.

We were warmly welcomed by the owner, Nuno, who quickly realized we were Portuguese and made us feel right at home. We were served by Juliana, who was extremely kind and recommended the octopus salad, which turned out to be an excellent choice.

To make the night even more special, they surprised us with two incredible desserts: a chocolate mousse with crumble and CRF Reserva, and a cinnamon-infused pear dessert that was absolutely delicious. I was also offered a glass of CRF Reserva, which was a fantastic touch and perfectly complemented the experience.

A truly memorable dining experience and a place I would highly recommend.

An exceptional dining experience from start to finish. The atmosphere is incredibly cozy and inviting, and the staff go above and beyond to make you feel truly at home. Every dish was outstanding, showcasing authentic flavors and impeccable quality. Without a doubt, this is the number one Portuguese restaurant in the tri-state area. I’ll be very happy to consider myself a regular moving forward.

I was completely blindsided by how good the food is. Completely underrated place, the quality and fullness of flavor beats out many nyc restaurants that are impossible to book. Don’t understand why this place doesn’t have more hype. The clam was perfect for the cold weather, the pork ribs were perfectly roasted, and the chicken piri piri is a culinary flex – showing off how great a simple roasted chicken can taste. The bread allowed us to re-experience the sauces in however combination we desired. I will have to revisit to try other dishes on the menu. 10/10

Visited Leitao last weekend to celebrate my birthday with their signature Portuguese suckling pig (for which the restaurant is named).

In short – the pig was underwhelming, but everything else was excellent. Even the sides that came with the pig were good. If you are considering the pig save your money and double down on the regular menu and/or drinks.

To elaborate, the pig came and the presentation was really beautiful. Unfortunately much of the skin was v hard and/or leathery – not crunchy/crispy – so nobody really ate it and it was hard to remove from the legs etc. because we couldn’t cut through it. The meat itself was tasty but a bit dry so I think the whole thing just got over cooked trying to crisp up the skin.
They poured a really tasty sauce over it when served, but the sauce was cold so the meat got cold quickly, though it helped to moisten and flavor it – would be awesome if they served it in a separate dish we could pour ourselves (or just drink it straight mmm) I ended up bagging the leftover pig up and throwing the whole thing in a slow cooker for a wonderful albeit expensive stew when I got home.

On the positive side, the staff were awesome – very friendly, attentive, and I suspect they noticed the pig wasn’t a home run because they brought a complimentary dish to try which we loved.

Things we loved:
Pork ribs
Beef in mushroom sauce – so so good
Codfish croquettes
fava bean mash

I would absolutely go back for those items, but would not repeat the suckling pig.

Overall a wonderful ambiance, staff, and food. Thank you for having us!

This was my second time at Leitao, and it was another wonderful experience! I celebrated AA’s birthday with our friends, and it was their first time here. We were seated in the prime area downstairs, which was quieter and offered nice privacy even though the space is small, it worked perfectly. We ordered the Traditional Portuguese Suckling Pig Dinner, and the portion was more than enough to feed five hungry people. All sides included except drinks. Everyone really enjoyed it.
Victor, our server, was very pleasant, helpful, and friendly throughout the meal. The 20% service charge was already included, which made things easy. We left feeling full and happy.
We’ll definitely be back to try the shareable plates next time!

Leitao is a fantastic Portuguese spot in the West Village—cozy, lively, and perfect for a date or small group. The food is bold and comforting; the Arroz de Marisco and seafood dishes are standouts, and the pastéis de nata are a must. Definitely a place I’d come back to.
