There were many places, but all the menus were in French, and my brain was doing gymnastics trying to understand. I walked along Rue de la Liberté, peeking into small shops and restaurants. At two places they looked at me and then looked away—maybe because I was a party of one. I started to feel like the lonely sheep from Luke 15, wandering around the streets of Martinique.
Thank God for technology! I opened ChatGPT like my little digital angel and asked for translation help. I tried my brave French, and the server told me, “No service for one, and we don’t take dollars or credit.” Ouch! I thought, Lord, even Mary and Joseph found a stable, and I can’t find a chair?
I walked a few feet to another place—same story, same look, same rejection. Then I remembered Andrew, our tour guide, had mentioned a restaurant called Le Impératrice. I marched in like a woman on a mission. With ChatGPT in my hand, I asked:
“Is it okay for one, and do you take dollars and credit card?”
The lady smiled and said, “Yes, yes, and yes!”
Hallelujah moment right there! I almost wanted to quote Psalm 23: “He prepares a table before me…” — and this time it was with air-conditioning too!
The restaurant feels very colonial, cool and calm, like stepping into an old movie. Folks, I wanted to give you a taste of local life, and this is as local as I can get for now. I haven’t met many English speakers here—only the waiter at this hotel—but somehow that makes the adventure sweeter.
From my seat I can even see the tiny restaurant that wouldn’t serve me. If they only knew I’m a great tipper! But hey, it’s part of the story. As Romans 8:28 says, all things work together for good—even being rejected twice before lunch.
This place has a unique wood smell that transports you to the past. If you close your eyes, you can imagine being back in 1935, ladies with hats, men with newspapers, and me arriving with a hungry modern stomach and a translator app.
I’ll try another local delicacy on my next walk after this meal. One thing I know: this adventure adds to my experience, it doesn’t take away from it. And now—I have a story to tell, seasoned with a little humor, a little faith, and hopefully a very good dessert . My waiter Christiana was excellent !!
