Hit List Dinner at Le Clou Is a Big Hit – The Georgetowner
Reviews
Cocktails and wines are well curated and crafted. The menu is full of traditional French finds but are elevated in one way or another. For example, escargot are served atop a flaky buttery biscuit-type pastry drowned in salted garlic and pastery butter. It’s heaven! Other menu stars were the Trout Almondine, the Crudité platter and the French 75 cocktail.
Go for the incredible food, stay for the impeccably designed interior (those chairs and that fabulous Verde colored menu cover !!), people watching, and the traditional cheese cart. You won’t be disappointed.
Service was a misssed mark on this visit. It appeared our server was being trained and many things were forgotten and the timing of courses was odd. They comped our first round of drinks to make up for their 30 minute delay. I’m looking forward to coming by again when I’m sure service will be wonderful.
My server was Juan who was very knowledgeable and friendly. He recommended some great dishes for me and also some great cocktails.
The food was fresh and so delicious. I enjoyed small dishes rather than large ones. I wanted to really taste and enjoy what I ordered and I felt ordering a large dish would end my experience. Overall, I spent 3 hours here conversing with the staff and just admiring the interior of this beautiful restaurant. One of my favorites was the cheese Tray which included some nuts, strawberry jam and a cherry jam. So good.
Honestly, everything here was great. Service was immaculate. For restaurant week, service was quick and efficient. I wasn’t trying to rush anyone either since I was here to enjoy the experience. Rushing it by demanding super fast service ruins that experience.
For first course, highly recommend the foie gras and tartare. For main course, bourguignon is a MUST. (In fact I love it so much that I ordered it three out of four visits!)
Definitely save room for dessert as you do not want to miss the silky pot de crème.
Oh. And did I mention the Moët vending machine in the lobby?
Noun. clou (plural clous) Something which holds the greatest attention; the chief point of interest.
First of all, the restaurant name is on the wall outside of the hotel and there is a door underneath the sign. But the door is locked. No any sign to point out that the restaurant entrance is inside the hotel.
Second when we asked about the parking situation seems nobody knows what exactly is the parking situation. They don’t care. It is customers’ own responsibility.
Third, we ordered the pastry basket from the menu which I took pictures. It clearly indicated ( 3pcs). They present a plate with 2 pieces. When we asked about it. The waitress went to the open kitchen area for a while then came back with a piece of pastry on a smaller plate. No apology no explanation. Sounds like we were asking something extra. I am not happy about it at all.
Fourth, there were two types of oysters on the tower and the bigger size oyster were not that fresh which I took picture for a single oyster. It has strong unfresh flavor. I hope I am not going to have stomach issues later.
I like the decor of the restaurant. Services need a lot of improvement.
Food – We ordered a lot and had plenty of leftovers. To start, we had French onion soup, 6 oysters, a leek dish and complementary bread. The oysters were super yummy, and the French onion soup was super delicious too! The leek dish was interesting as I think of leeks as a minor ingredient in a dish, but leeks were the featured ingredient. I enjoyed it though!
For the mains, I got cod over lentils and my husband got the duck. Our sides were mushrooms, and French fries. The duck dish was a little different than described on the menu we saw online but was very good according to my husband (I didn’t try this dish). The cod was super good too. The mushrooms and fries were amazing! The fries tasted like they were cooked in duck fat or something, but they weren’t – apparently, they were just cooked in really good oil. The hollandaise sauce with the fries was yum! The mushrooms were very juicy and marinated in this very delicious wine sauce. So good!
Unfortunately, we didn’t have room for dessert. We’ll be back though. We might even come back just for a drink and dessert.
*Also, apparently there’s a kid’s menu, since this is technically a hotel restaurant. There are few restaurants on the hill with a kid’s menu, and even less that are fine dining. We’ll bring our son next time. There is good free wifi for his ipad too.
*We also heard that there’s going to be a couple other dining/bar options in the hotel opening soon. We’re excited to give them a try!
