Le Cavalier (pronounced: luh-KAH-vuhl-YAY) honors the deep equestrian tradition in the Brandywine River Valley. Chef-Partner Tyler Akin’s opening brasserie menu draws influence from Provence and North Africa. The seasonal menu showcases innovative riffs on French classics while emphasizing the abundance of Delaware’s foodways. The space has been thoughtfully designed to create a lively atmosphere while celebrating the room’s elegant bones, and features 118 seats in the dining room, an intimate 13-seat bar, and seasonal outdoor patio seating.

I want to start by shouting out Frank F., our server. Frank was truly exceptional — warm, attentive, and the absolute highlight of the evening. If this review were based on service alone, it would be five stars.
Unfortunately, everything else about Le Cavalier (Wilmington, DE) fell painfully short. My husband and I were excited to dine here for a special celebration and intentionally chose this restaurant for its reputation and ambiance. In hindsight… we should have listened to the 4.2 Google reviews.
The experience began with the shrimp appetizer.
One of the shrimp tails was brown — an immediate red flag — and the overall dish was unappetizing and underwhelming.
Then came my entrée: the short rib.
And I say this with complete sincerity as someone who has eaten at many restaurants and absolutely loves food: this was the worst short rib I have ever had in my entire life. It tasted as if it had been boiled in plain water, completely untouched by seasoning, depth, or care. No flavor. No richness. No technique. Nothing. I genuinely could not believe a French restaurant would send this out of the kitchen.
I found myself smiling through the meal out of sheer disbelief — mostly because we were already looking at a $200 bill for what became the most disappointing dining experience I’ve ever had.
The final blow?
I woke up at 4 a.m. with food poisoning.
Hours after leaving the restaurant, the only thing I could think about was what I had eaten there. That alone speaks volumes.
Le Cavalier is a gorgeous restaurant with stunning interiors, but great décor cannot hide poor execution. For the price point and the reputation, the food should not be this careless.
I’m deeply disappointed and honestly hope the restaurant reevaluates its kitchen operations. The only redeeming part of the evening was our wonderful server, Frank. Beyond that… I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone.
The food presentation was great, flavor was good but not knock your socks off.
Now the ambiance and decor was stunning! Beautiful environment, with a friendly and professional staff.
We had the plateau. We were missing our mussels, but did not bother to ask for a correction. The oysters were excellent. Lobster was nice. Shrimp were nice. Didn’t care for the tartare. (Personal preference)
I had the onion soup which was VERY tasty.
Then I had the Elysian Fields Lamb Loin. The lamb was delicious, cooked true to temp, and tender. I didn’t like the chickpeas as the flavor was too much of a contrast to the lamb for my taste.
I also ordered local mushrooms but did not receive this side.
The dessert was one of my favorites.. chocolate mousse. I meant to eat only a couple bites but nearly ate the whole thing.
While my waitress was delightful in personality and graciousness, I was disappointed in missing a couple of items on the menu. She was enjoyable and I would come back to her section in the future. I’d recommend ensuring the server you have has your order down.
I also ordered the filet in the morning. It was delicious. I was very happy to receive it rare. Potatoes were cooked to perfection: crispy outside, tender inside & full of savory flavor. The greenbeans were also very good.
I’d return to this restaurant again.
I was most disappointed when receiving cold food and being told I could not have horseradish for my prime rib. The apple cake was dry . Most disappointed …. In the Hotel DuPont and their resources for chefs
As for the food, the steak tartare was the reason we chose this restaurant. The portion was generous, though I would have much preferred an option for toast as a side instead of the fries. However it was overall unremarkable. At least two members of our group were disappointed in their portions, for the oatmeal and parfait. The parfait may have been more accurately described as a fruit cup.
Despite the beautiful setting, I would likely not go back.
Service was absolutely amazing. Our server listened to my love of sweeter coffee and took it upon herself to serve my cappuccino with extra sugar cubes as an assisted service.
The food was delightful. We weren’t too adventurous into the French cuisine since it was early morning still, but my onion soup was a delightful balance of all the ingredients. It was packed with flavor without feeling overall too salty like so many onion soups lean.
The haricots verts were buttery and very well seasoned, and my husband’s green salad that came with his omelette had a lovely light and well seasoned dressing perfect for a morning meal.
The building is gorgeous even when it shows some wear from age like the du pont itself, with so much sculpted detail and a beautiful bar area.
